Repeated 'Safety Minder has been disabled' notifications

I'm starting my own thread so that my problem does not get marked resolved.  Many users seem to be reporting this problem but not much response from support.  It would be nice to know that this issue is being investigated.  I very much like this product with the exception of this issue.  I would pay an annual subscription for this product if you can make it work correctly.

Safety minder is installed on my desktop PC and a netbook.  The desktop is Windows Vista Ultimate, 32-bit, and has Norton 360 v3 installed.  The netbook is Windows XP Professional, 32-bit, and also has Norton 360 v3 installed.  Both have NSM 1.1.0.21.  The password for the parent account is secure.  Both computers are members of a domain.

The netbook seems to be the one which mysteriously loses the child's account settings.  When I log onto the web interface from my laptop at onlinefamily.norton.com, the netbook no longer lists one or more of the child's accounts.  I am unable to check a box to specify the account which this child uses.  However, if I log on to the netbook as the child I can right-click the paw and edit to re-enable the account.

I don't recall having the issue with the desktop and wonder whether it might related to the occasional loss of wireless network connectivity.  I should point out that the domain users have been added as local users on both computers.  Any help troubleshooting the issue would be appreciated.

Edit: I have noticed that the messages are sometimes related to the desktop computer as well.  This is far less often than the netbook.  It is a hardwired ethernet connection.

Thank you,

Rodney

I too have this problem. I am running the latest NSM and Windows Vista Pro Home Edition on a hardwired computer. I have been receiving messages that my daughters account is disabled, but the Summary page shows her activity. The icon also shows her account as active. Funny though, the Time tab shows no activity.

My sons account shows no information even though he is logged in and using the computer. His account also shows that it is active when I right click on the paw icon.

I too am getting this same notification. The NSM application is current, running on Windows XP Professional on a desktop computer. At first I thought my son was turning off the NSM and I came onto this site to suggest it not be so easy to turn off this feature. However, looking at the activity list online, it registered other web site hits immediately after the notification. I have checked the pawprint icon and it appears that NSM is working.

This is surely a glitch in this program.

Hi schuess60,

For “The Time tab s hows no activity”,  only when the child exceeds the total time that is allowed, the website reports this under Activity -> Time.

The feature that recording a kid's total times on the computer even when it is within the restrictions is on our enhancement list.

For your son's account, please make sure his profile is being monitored as "XXX is protected" under Settings -> Profile  Thanks,Katie

Hi KRChoctaw,

Could you explain "it registered other web site hits immediately after the notification"?  Are you saying you received the message after your son registered on other web sites?

Thanks,

Katie

Yes, all my sons tabs are “protected”. OK, on the time tab. I also get emails saying my daughters NSM has been disabled and it has not.

Hi Katie,

I went on OnlineFamily.Norton.com and viewed the "All Activity" tab for my son's user id. It states that there was Tamper Detection -- Norton Safety Minder has been disconnected. Monitoring unavailable." Two minutes later there are other sites listed as "Allowed Web site visited" and it continues on listing more sites.

I just went to his user id, and the pawprint icon in the tray is missing. Norton Internet Security is running, and so I went on some web sites myself on his user id. When I checked my Norton account, those sites appeared as allowed activity on my son's list on OnlineFamily.Norton.com.

As I said before, I thought my son was somehow turning off the NSM, because I was getting that message fairly often whenever he would go on the Internet. I know he doesn't know my password, so I thought there was some other way he was defeating the NSM. If that is so, the application needs to be fixed so only the parent can disconnect NSM. But it appears that it is not being turned off; it's only reporting that it is and then continuing to monitor web site activity.

I hope that clarifies my posting. Thanks for any help you can give on this.

I seem to be having a similar problem with my son's computer.  I receive frequent notices that the Safety Minder has been disabled, but when I check it on his computer, it still is functioning.  It is running Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton Safety Minder version 1.1.5.15.  The computer is connected via wireless to a broadband router.  I can provide additional info if it would help.

Please, everybody, join us in this thread so that we can have a consistent discussion about this.  Symantec already knows the likely cause as you will see when you read the thread.  There are so many different threads that it is very confusing.

I am having the same issue as the original poster.  I think that these may be two different issues because one appears to involve loss of internet connection while the OP (as well as myself) are seeing this issue with a hard wired connection and no tampering.  I also receive the message that it has been disabled yet it continues to monitor activity. I just want to be sure that it is still actually monitoring, even though it says its been disabled as I could live with the occasional notice and simply disregard.

Hi stevedub40,

Our development team is working on the issue actively.  If you see the Norton Safety Minder icon, a dog paw is active (not grayed out or with a red X on it), then the program is still monitoring the kid's online activities.  You can also double check it by going to Activity->Web to see if the web activities are being listed on the page.

Thanks,

Katie
