Repeating characters

I appear to have a virus which manifests itself in one of two ways. Either the last character keyed repeats itself ad infinitum or existing text is deleted one character at a time. The only way to stop this is to reboot but the problem recurs after a time. Has anyone experienced this previously and can offer a solution?

Yes. I've tried using another keyboard and checked to ensure the StickyKey feature hasn't been activated by accident

Hi mayflower,

Does this happen whenever you type, or does it just occur when using certain programs, such as MS Word?

OK -- that's the way troubleshooting oges ... <s>

Let's start with my boilerplate ....

To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn

If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.

Have you updated yor security application and run a full system scan? Any reports of malware?

Perhaps also run one or both successively of these two malware cleaner-uppers:

Malwarebyte

Superantispyware

I'm assuming of course that you can effectively and safely access the internet if necessary on a different computer.

Download and install the free versions since they do all you need by running on command, not in the background. Be careful that you do chose the free versions. Then update them to the latest definitions and run them in turn.

Both have a good reputation for cleaning up.

If by any chance they refuse to install or won't run after installing because malware is preventing them you can sometimes defeat the malware by changing the name of the exe file to anything except its real title!

Please let us know how you get on.

Hello mayflower

If you can't access Malwarebytes or Superantispyware from the links given by Hugh, you can try these download sites to get the programs. The malware may block the actual sites, but may not block these alternate sites to get the programs. Please remember to update the program also before you run it.

You can find Malwarebytes here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

It is a safer location to get the program from than malwarebytes themselves because some malware creators have large lists of sites that they block. Please be careful to down load the correct program ----the FREE version of MALWAREBYTES

(Thanks to Delph for providing the alternative site)

Here is another link to get SuperAntiSpyware

Here is another site you can use to get the program.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

The download button is on the right hand side. Please be careful not to download Spyware Doctor which is on the left side. Also, please don't forget to update the program each time before use of it. In fact you can update it every day just in case some malware may prevent you from updating it.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.
