Replace laptop hard drive ghost 9.0

I was hoping I could upgrade the hard drive on my laptop by going through the following steps: 1) make an image of my existing hard drive to a USB external drive 2) shut down the machine, 3) pull out out the old hard drive and plug in a new hard drive, 4) boot from the Ghost CD and 5) use Ghost to restore the image of the old drive on the external USB drive to the new hard drive.    I'm using Ghost 9.0.   I also have Partition Magic 8.0 of that will be of any help.

When I do a cold boot into the Ghost CD Ghost does not recognize the external USB drive.  If I attach the USB hard drive while in Windows, then do a restart into the Ghost CD, then Ghost will recognizes a USB hard drive.

I need to do a cold boot in order from my plan to work.  But based on my experments above it does not seem like there is a way to do a cold boot from the Ghost CD and have it recognize the a external USB hard drive.   If that is true is there a way to work around this?

Thank you.
