Requesting Help

I have a co0py of Norton Internet Security 2011 installed on my laptop and NIS 2011 Netbook on my netbook and both are having the same problem, I`m planning to install a copy on my desktop and use the 3 license to cover all three but I want test them first to make sure they work.

Now this is the problem, I have install 18.1.x.x (can-t recall exact version) and everything works perfectly, then I run LiveUpdate download aprox. 131MB of update and it tells me it need to reboot, after I reboot I opened up NIS to rerun live update make sure I didn't`t miss anything and it get`s about 5mb of update then all good. I checked the version 18.5.0.125

The problem is this, I no longer have access to my settings panel, I did before LiveUpdate when the version was 18.1 but after the live update to 18.5 I can`t get the Setting~s, if I try sometimes nothing happens, some times a windows opens with "one click support" with error code of "3005.100" and this is happens on both the laptops I've tried uninstalling and using NRT and then reinstall it, the same happens works fine until LiveUpdate updates the install to 18.5.

I really don't know what to do I've use Norton since I bought a copy of systemworks back in 2000 and migrated to NIS in 2004 never had a problem that a format and reinstall didn't fix.

Hi! Nightweb,

Welcome to the Norton Community!!  :)

Are you installing NIS 2011 from a CD for your laptop and a USB drive for your Netbook?  Please note that the product keys are not interchangeable for the two computers you listed as currently having the product installed on, however the version for your laptop should also work with a desktop computer but not a netbook.

to bee honest I was using 2007 from a cd for a while now but thought it was time for an upgrade, I downloaded a trial copy from norton website and tried that. as I am still tweaking the install I thought'd I'd stick to that until I get the os install right, (it only has a atom processor and 8GB HDD so reinstalling a few times while I Tweak the install) then instead of buying a copy I was just gonna get a subscription. also I haven't noticed that much of a difference between the net book edition and the standard so haven't really decided if it's worth getting the netbook edition aswell.

once I installed the trial copy I started getting the error so I did the standard uninstall and reinstall stuff then after hitting forums found lot's of people had problems with 18.5 and were told to go back to 18.1 so I googled for a old copy found a copy of 18.1 on softpedia.net as thought it might be because I was using a new version. once I get all this sorted I was planing on buying subscription's for them all.

Here is the solution from Symantec for this error:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100910115402EN

If this solution is not working, then you need to uninstall using the Norton Removal Tool.

ok I have uninstalled and used norton removal tool already, serveral times in fact, the problem return after a install only when I update, as it stand done full  virus scan all clean, and as I say all works perfect up until the update, so after updating, with the updater, and rebooting how do I stop the error from  coming up?

ok did that and still no joy, though I'm not getting the error code just nothing happening now :(

Let's do a CheckDisk first.

  • Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check (This should be the root drive, C).
  • Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  • Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
  • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
  •

After you complete the chkdsk, download and run the Norton Removal Tool, and then restart the computer.

Then search and delete all the Symantec and Norton files from your computer.

Download a fresh copy of NIS 2011 from http://www.norton.com/nis11

    Install the product.

did a full chkdisk scan for lost clusters an all (loving the ssd now) ok is that the netbook edition? you want me to uninstall and reinstall?

Some users do use the regular version on a netbook.  You may have to turn off some things like Community watch and optimization to conserve resources, but it will run.  The netbook edition is a separate charge, so that would double your expense in purchasing the products.

    Tech,

Unless it is one of the original very small screen netbooks, experience has shown that the standard version (desktop/laptop there is no difference) will work fine on a netbook.

Originally introduced on a thumbdrive to deal with the no-optical drive situation the netbook edition had extended graphics resolution to deal with the smaller screens and battery saving features that you can mimic in the standard versions of Norton ....

So the 3 PC licence can be used on all Desktop, Laptop or Netbook PCs subject to the screen size.

    Nightweb,

To deal with the version issue first -- yhou can use the standard version on modern Desktop, Laptop or Netbook PCs -- see my note to Tech83 -- but note that the KEYs are not interchangeable although this is being repeatedly requested from Norton in a thread they monitor in Norton Ideas Forum.

You can download the current versions of NIS 2011 from here:

    New NIS 2011:

Click on this link -- NIS 2011  This will download a single file of around 90MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!

Click on this link -- NIS 2011 Netbook Edition if you want the Netbook Edition of NIS 2011 -- the KEYs are not interchangeable between the two versions of NIS.

After installing run LiveUpdate manually a few times with a reboot inbetween until it tells you that you are fully uptodate.

What you describe as a second download after a first large one is not abnormal and when it happens you should reboot again after it installs ..... sometimes the first manual update has to uninstall and install something before another update can be applied. Note also that there was a sudden update yesterday to deal with an IE8 problem.

After the Settings problem you report, that followed an update download, did you reboot the computer and see if the settings are now there? Someone may be able to help with that error code so hang on.

I see an earlier report and solution here:

    http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/PROBLEM-IN-NIS-2011-V-18-5-0-125/m-p/357644#M142449

Hope that helps although you seem to have covered that one and that you will successfully update to NIS 2011 on all the PCs.

ok not sure what the problems was but after uninstalling some stuff and uninstalling NIS and reinstalling using the new netbook version (I'm using a mini 9 with a 8.9" screen so trying that but again if there much call in the diiference? any tips/suggestions would be welcome) and it seems to finally work now, just downloaded a whole  lotta updates gonna reboot and check it

Glad to hear it's working. I've no personal experience with netbooks but it may be that the 8.9 in screen may need the netbook version, although since I believe it's mostly a question of how the GUI fits on the screen I would ask myself How Important is It ? as long as the protection works -- I don't spend much time looking at the GUI; the less the better so far as I am concerned <s>

I'm happy it works  can't figure out what the problem was though there was a few games I removed possible some copy protection muck it up wouldn't be the first time. as for the version thing I was wondering if the netbook is streamed to be low resource using and better on battery I started wondering as I got a laptop and a netbook and the version's seem to protect the same I'm just wondering what features are missing/disabled to increase the proformance of netbook vs starndard version, on wikipedia (not that you can take it as definitive truth) it says the gui is optimised to be easier to read, (always a plus but just a plus) it also says that all "non-critical tasks are delayed while on battery" this sounds like it could benifit my laptops as my battery life's are getting kinda long in the tooth so  if the netbook version can save battery life could be worth it but what are these "non-Critical" tasks are?

I thought I'd posted on the difference but it may have been in another thread on the netbook issue.

WIKI is basically correct -- the graphics are optimized for the original small screens but this is not needed with the 10+in screens most have nowadays and the default settings include not carrying out the usual idle tasks if you are running on battery but the standard version can be set to do this too.

Hang on for someone who is more conversent with these settings than I am since I only run a desktop at present.
