I notice that the "restore anywhere" option option in Ghost 15 always seems to be grayed out. Does anyone know if there is a seperate license that can be purchased to enable this capability?
I will have a need coming up soon for this capability.
NOTE: I'm aware of a potential workaround, namely, doing a conversion to a vitual disk format, then restoring that virtual disk and choosing the option to run mini setup. Unfortunately, in my case I will have a need to do this with a Win7 system that has a System Recovery Partition. In all my testing this workaround works fine EXCEPT when I have a SRP present. It always yields a non-booting system for me.
In digging further I found that Symantec has another product, Backup Exec System Recovery Desktop Edition, that appears to be almost exactly the same product as Ghost but it clearly does have the Restore Anywhere option. However, system requirements indicate that it only works with Win7 Pro, Ultimate, and Enterprise (I need it for Home Premium) and requires purchase of 5 licenses minimum. My need is for only 2 systems.
I seem to be in some crazy middle ground where I can't get this capability.
Surely, there must be a way to purchase a license to enable this in ghost (if not, why even show the option in the program?). I plan on calling Symantec, just thought someone here might be familiar with this already.
I have not used the exact steps listed in the links provided but did verify that the correct partion was marked active. I will take a closer look at the links provided.
I don't understand why Windows 7 makes an SRP with Home premium or basic editions anyway.
Without bitlocker I don't see a need for it. Personally, even with a version that supports bitlocker I'll get it to install into a single partition or remove the SRP. I have no need to encrypt my system partition and would rather use a program like true crypt if I want an encrypted data partition or container file.
I agree with you that it's shortsighted of Symantec to not offer the capability. I looked into once as well.
$84.87 each with a 5 license minimum is pretty steep. Why on earth would they not sell one or 2?
I also looked into and found that each and every one of the other 3 "big name" products offer the ability to do a restore anyware either for free or for a minor extra charge.
In fact, Ghost is the only big name image program I know that does not offer it.
I'm also disappointed that Symantec does not offer any discounts for multiple licenses of Ghost. You can't even qualify for an upgrade discount if you already own one license of Ghost 15.
There is another product that gives very reasonable 3 license packs. Why does Symantec give a discount for NIS but not Ghost?
I'm not cheep but I think it's unreasonable to pay $425.00 to be able to do it with a Symantec product.
I'm with you, I can figure out a way to do it with something I already have even if it entails a lot of extra work.
But I couldn't reccomend the product to someone who is planning a hardware upgrade in the near future. Unless I'm willing to personally help them do it myself and feel that when the time comes there system won't have other problems.
If Symantec doesn't add this feature into the next version I think they would be making a big mistake.

I'm not a huge fan of the SRP either, and I typically install in such a way as to prevent the SRP from being created, but I'm stuck with it in this situation.
In the meantime, I've found some new information. I downloaded a Trial version of Backup Exec System Recovery Desktop Edition and restored my existing image using its recovery disc. I chose the option for "Restore Anywhere" and it was able to perfectly restore what Ghost could not.
Looks like I'm headed for purchase of some licenses. It's just a shame to have to purchase a minimum of 5 licenses when I actually only have 3 machines
I also had a Chat Session w/Symantec Support and they were not able to offer any other resolution.
It's amazing - Backup Exec System Recovery Desktop Edition appears to be almost identical to Ghost 15. It would really be nice if Symantec offered a less expensive way to add this one feature to Ghost especially since licensing is so totally different between the products.

I have used that workaround in virtual PC for a Windows 7 image and it worked with the SRP partition being there. Make sure the partition you do the mini set up on is the one with Windows installed.
Is it possible that the system won't boot due to motherboard settings? For example AHCI mode? Well I guess the mini set up should take care of that.
