Thanks for the reply. The prob started a couple of days ago. I did my usual scan with Norton and found that the usual 150.000 files had increased to upwards of 400.000 files. Haven't a clue where they have come from. Went into 'search' all files and folders but could see nothing there to explain. This same prob also occurred some months ago and I found out by chance. Went into My computer, properties etc and the graph showed that I had 95% usable space, but I was trying to download some 'bird song' and was warned I had insufficient space. A Norton scan at the time showed my file volume to be 700.000. No idea how, still haven't. My son helpfully told me that 95% of my computer was being controlled by someone else. Hijacked!!! I had a relative re-install windows but on this occasion thought I might do the restore solution. ie. go back two or three weeks ahead of the date when I downloaded music from 'utube' for a friend. Thought that might have corrupted the system. The restore facility fails on all the available dates. I fear I may have to yet again reinstall windows. But I would dearly love to know what the problem is. The hijacking thing, incomprehensible to me is a worry.
Hope this fuller account is intelligible enough, if not do come back to me.

Hi Barb
When you say System Restore 'fails' do you mean it unable to perform the restore, or that the restore didn't resolve the problem?
If System Restore is failing to restore, most likely some app is stopping it. In this case, you must go into Safe Mode and restore from there, where it should work.
To get into Safe Mode, turn off your PC, then turn it on again, when you turn it on immediately start tapping on the F8 Key, until it starts to load into Safe Mode. Then follow the normal procedure for System Restore.
As for all the addition files on your PC, many may be junk files, try downloading CCleaner, tick all the boxes, and run it. Clean your registry at the same time, just click on the appropriate button.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for that advice. I will try the f8 key. Yes, it was unable to perform. I do have the C Cleaner and use it regularly. Someone else suggests the excessive file count may be a Norton 'thing'. Shouldn't raise it on this board I suppose, but I'm told that there are more reliable Internet Security products available. I didn't find the Semantic advice lines very helpful either.

It is possible that the large number of 'extra' files have been created by System Restore. In my experience System Restore can create gigabytes of files quite quickly.

You may be right. I haven't sorted the restore probs yet, but went into childrens a/c's and noticed one had supervisor access. Changed it to child, scanned again with Norton and now have a volume of 276.000 files. A reduction of 200.000 files. I'll get to the bottom of things eventually.

I remain far from clear. I suspect you have already posted elsewhere. You should advise readers of this thread of your operating system. I believe it is Windows XP although not sure which one, and either SP1 or SP3 but not SP2. I suggest you ensure that your machine is full uptodate with Windows critical updates and readvise.
Also are you advising that you cannot enter into Safe mode? If so your computer is likely infected with a virus.
Thanks for all advice received re my large volume of files. Still haven't got to the bottom of that one! Tried restoring to a date prior to downloading music and failed. Tried all given possible dates, all failed. any advice on that please?
Barb
This appears to be a new thread and accordingly I do not understand your issue. Please explain.
