Restored with 360. Where are my desktop files now located?

So, I'm kind of computer illiterate. My laptop HP Pavilion DV6000xx stopped working. And I mean, STOPPED working. It would freeze during boot up every time. No safe-start option. Took it to a computer whiz (family friend at Microsoft) and he said to it was a lost cause and to reset it to factory settings (and restore it from the backup made with Norton 360 on my external HD). Took it to a shop for a second opinion and that was it. I restored it to the factory settings using the HP recovery discs I had made. Ran all of the 107 Windows updates, reinstalled Norton 360 and ran the restore from the previously mentioned backup from my external HD.

Herein lies the problem. I had some important files on the desktop that I know were there when it was backed-up (and I had everything checked under the "things to back up" list). I'm having a hell of a time locating them. Tried the search thing under the start menu with no luck. I had checked the option to over write (or something like that) to the original locations, but I have nothing (shortcuts or otherwise) that I had originally had on my desktop. Any ideas on where to look, or how to get them back?

I need some of these files/records for Veterans Affairs and School, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
