I routinely use Win7 Create System Image to backup to an external eSATA HDD. I have been having some strange problems surfing the net (IE9 32-bit) that seemed to start a week or so ago, around the time of the latest Microsoft Updates, but that is just my guess and I could be wrong.
I am thinking about restoring the system from an older Win7 System Image. I have read here that there are issues with NIS/NAV when doing a System Restore (restore point), but are there any precautions I should take if I decide to restore from a System Image? Will NIS just restore normally? I know I will have to run a LiveUpdate after the restore, but are there any other gotchas I should look out for?
I restored the disk image this morning and all seemed to go well, so far. As expected, I had to run LU several times (with reboots) to get NIS 2012 back up to the current version. The image I restored was also before the most recent Java & Flash Player updates, so I updated those as well.
This image put me before the last round of MS updates which I am suspecting is the cause of my IE9 loops/hangs/crashes. I'm going to run this way for a while and see how it goes. I may then start installing the MS critical updates, but one at a time. It also put me before 3 lenovo updates for my T410 ThinkPad. I'll also re-install those one at a time to see what happens.
Thanks for the reassurance about doing a disk image with NIS 2012 installed. Turns out it was no problem!
Very glad to hear your restore has gone well, and thank you for posting your results, it is a great feeling when you know it all works.
Image backup is my preferred method, up until Windows 7 I used the Symantec product Norton Ghost do do images. Ghost is still a great program but for me the built in imaging in 7 does what I need.

I've been running on the restored disk image for several days. I've updated NIS 2012 (19.6.1.8), but NOT any of the previous MS or lenovo updates. I'm still experiencing the same IE9 (32-bit) hangs/crashes.
I've noticed a connection (I think) between the hangs/crashes and navigating the LinkedIn.com website. I've switched to Compatibility View and it seems to be better. I will need more test time to be sure.
Right now, nothing leads me to believe that this is in any way an NIS 2012 issue. Very strange.
Glad the restored image is working well, but sorry to hear your crashes have not subsided.
IE crashes can be so many things, compatibility mode can help as you have found, addons and sometimes combinations of addons can lead to issues.
The three Symantec addons are usually no trouble (they are internal to your protection software) but you could very safely temporarily disable all other addons and check to see if you can locate any addons affecting your browsing experience. You could even do the Symantec ones (just be aware you are limiting some protections). Then enable them one by one untill you find the offending one.
An easy way (fast) to check a known site is to start without any addons, to do this click - start>all programs>accessories>system tools> Internet Explorer (no addons)
have no experience with Lenovo, but I have had no issues with MS updates causing crashes.
Some other things would be low system memory due to to other programs using to much in spurts, I have even heard of some video drivers being blamed for IE crashes.
You may wish to try some other forums, Windows7 forums has helped me a lot and is a well run forum with a lot of smart people on it.
Do you have the integrated graphics or the discrete graphics on your T410? Some reviews I've read point to poor performance on video playback by the integrated graphics with frame rates that are unusable.
I'd certainly make sure you have the current video driver installed.
If it's the integrated graphics I wonder if it is worth checking how much system RAM is allocated to the graphics and increasing it, especially if you have 4+GB on board.
It sounds like a nice machine -- I'm a Thinkpad fan myself but couldn't afford the X series when I wanted a lightweight machine.
As a Thinkpad user you may like to check out this Forum http://forum.thinkpads.com/ which is not run by IBM/Lenovo! The man behind it won the legal battle with IBM to use the Thinkpad name for it! He's extremely knowledgeable and very helpful.
The T410 has Intel integrated graphics. Video playback (like YouTube) isn't the problem. It's things like outright IE9 crashes where it wants to send the crash info to MS, or like tonight, I had 5 tabs open and everything was going fine then at some point when I clicked on another tab, the window wouldn't change. It continued to show the last tab. I had to close & reopen IE9.
Yes, the video drivers are current using lenovo System Update.
I've been a member of the ThinkPads forum since 2006 when I got my first IBM ThinkPad, a T21, which I still have. I know Bill. I use the same screen name on that site as here on the Norton site.
I'm thinking of trying to reset IE9 back to factory defaults, but first I want to make sure I know what options/addons/search/accelerators/toolbars I have since those will all be wiped out. I've also read where opening multiple tabs can be a problem. I may try going back to just one tab for a while to see what happens.
I focussed on the video side because of the number of times I have seen seemingly unrleated problems disappear after updating or reinstalling the video driver!
My first Thinkpad was the TP701C with the wonderful butterfly keyboard! I bought it the day it came out (must have been mad since I paid $4000 for the top of the line model with a tiny hard drive (with WIndows and OS/2 installed!) and some tiny amount of RAM both of which I upgraded through Bill Morrow! He's a Floridean like me!
I would certainly use the Reset button on IE9 and you can install the Norton Web protection without the actual toolbar.
I'm in FL too (Tampa) and I know Bill lived on the FL east coast several years ago, but I thought he moved to Georgia.
If I were to reset IE9, exactly what would I have to do to get the Norton Add-ons back? Is the reset going to delete them or just disable them? Right now, I have the Toolbar & Identity Protection enabled (both are ver 2012.5.2.5). Vulnerability Protection is disabled (ver 10.1.0.0).

After reset I think all you have to do is recheck the boxes in IE / Tools / Manage Add-ons.
But if you want to keep the Safe Web flagging without the space loss of the Norton Toolbar itself then there's a combination of 2 out of the three that you keep.
Let someone else check this out for you since I'm not really up on the terminology......
