A storm crashed my PC, but did not damage HDD. I put the old HDD into a new PC, installed NIS2010 (WIN7 64 bit) and searched the forums for guidance. I found the .dat and .bak files, which were last modified last week. I have not added any logins, cards or passwords to the new installation. A number of the solutions I found were pre-Windows 7. I have been unable to copy the new file which is about 2.2MB into the proper IdentitySafeDataStore sub-folder, probably because it is "in use" by NIS.
Surely there is a way to get hundreds of saved logins to the re-installed location. I used the same password in each installation, so opening the file shouldn't be a problem. If anyone can provide a current solution, I will really appreciate it. Thanks.
Great suggestion! Why worry about copying if I can import directly in NIS 2012? BTW, I had tried turning off the tamper switch but that hadn't helped, probably since I didnt log out. I have the old HDD installed in the new computer as a non-boot backup drive. Everything was fully compatible.
Generally the newer versions of NIS will install cleanly overtop a previous version. However since you are two versions behind, it would probably be best to uninstall NIS 2010 before installing NIS 2012. There is a manual method with multiple steps to perform this procedure or you can accomplish this with one tool, the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool.
"The Norton Remove & Reinstall tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer, and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product."
Since your 'old' Identity Safe data is stored on another drive in your computer it is probably safe, but it wouldn't hurt to make a copy to removable media such as a USB flash drive. (Better safe than sorry!)
Then proceed to this page and follow the instructions for downloading and running the tool.
Once NIS 2012 is installed, please run Live Update a few times until no more updates are available. Restarts may be required.
Restoring the data to Norton 2012 Products:
Be sure you are logged in to Identity Safe.
Open your browser and in the Norton Toolbar click the drop down list under Identity Safe. Go to Options > Import.
In the Import Identity Safe Data window, 'Browse' to the 'old' .dat file and click open.
Under 'While importing data', select 'Merge with existing data' and click OK. You may be prompted to enter the password for the old data.
If you have changed any login credentials for a particular site since the older data was created, you will be presented with a Data Conflict window. Select which login version you wish to keep and click OK.
OK your way out and check that the merged logins have been added and are working.
Everything worked perfectly! In fact, I did not uninstall NIS 2010 - no hitches there - and had moved and renamed the .dat file already. The import worked fine, even though it no longer had the default file name. I have also exported a copy of new file to an external drive.
