Rhapsody Music blocked by OnlineFamily.Norton

Has anyone else experienced OnlineFamily.Norton blocking your music subscription feeds through Rhapsody?  I subscribe to V Cast Music with Rhapsody to listen to music on my PC (Vista Home Premium).  After installing OnlineFamily.Norton, now Rhapsdoy only plays the first 10 to 30 seconds of every subscription song and then I get an error message from Rhapsdoy saying the Subscription Stream is Temporarily Unavailable.

There is an issue in the Rhapsody online knowledge base about this topic which I tried all of the troubleshooting steps but nothing would fix the problem, including disabling my firewall, deleting browser cache and cookies, deleting the Rhapsody cache file, and resetting the browser (Internet Explorer 8.0) privacy and security settings to the default level.

The only thing that fixed the problem was uninstalling OnlineFamily.Norton.  Does anyone know of any setting in OnlineFamily.Norton that will make it cohabitate harmoniously with Rhapsody? I added allowed web site's to my child's Web Settings to allow the domain names that Rhapsody says it uses which are:

rbn.com
llnwd.net
real.com
rhapsody.com
listen.com
*.doubleclick.net

Rajesh,

Thanks for the prompt reply.  The Entertainment & Music category of the Web settings is unchecked but the problem still happens.  I have tried disabling Norton Safety Minder on my child's account as you mentioned below but the problem still happens which is strange, I know.

I have two computers in my household.  My desktop which was running OnlineFamily was having the same problem as my laptop.  I tried everything I knew short of uninstalling OnlineFamily but nothing worked until I uninstalled it.  It's my laptop that still has OnlineFamily on it which will still not work with Rhapsody.  The only common denominator between the two that I can think of is that the computer without OnlineFamily has no problems with Rhapsdoy while the other one does.  Maybe there is something else causing the problem, but I don't know.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for letting us know, we will get back to you on this issue.

Thanks,

Rajesh D

Rajesh,

One more thing, tonight I used the Windows Task Manager on my laptop to End Process Tree for the Norton process ccsvchst.exe on both Windows accounts: mine (Administrator) and my daughter's account, however I did not uninstall OnlineFamily. Rhapsody had no streaming errors after ending that process, so I think it's pretty certain that OnlineFamily, or at least its ccsvchst.exe service, and Rhapsody do conflict.

I hope this one can be fixed, because other than the Rhapsody issue, OnlineFamily is a great web Parental Software control.

Chris

Chris,

Do you have any other Symantec products running on your system?  I do and I'm pretty sure I had the ccsvchst.exe service on my system before I had OnlineFamily when I only had Norton Internet Security.  While ccsvchst.exe is a Symantec process I'm not sure it's specific to Online Family.

Just thinking out loud here.  :)

Paul

Paul,

No, other than OnlineFamily, I don't have any other Symantec products running/installed on either computer with this issue.  But I appreciate your input.

Chris

Confirmed, we have reproduced the issue here and are working on a solution to the problem. It doesn't happen every time and if you refresh the page it may just play the entire song.

I will update this thread when we know more. Thanks for the information.

Matt

Matt,

Good to know I'm not crazy. :smileyhappy:

Yes, you're right. It doesn't happen every time which was causing me fits because I had eliminated everything else I knew that might cause a problem.

I look forward to a solution because OnlineFamily is a great product!

Chris

Is there a solution to this problem?  It has been 6 months since the last post.

I'd like to use Norton Online Family, but won't be able to unless this is resolved.

Theokrat

Sadly, this problem was never resolved. Although no one from Norton personally contacted me, a very nice representative from Real Networks (Rhapsody) worked with me on the phone over several weeks to try to fix the problem from their end, but to no avail. I ultimately uninstalled Online Family Safety.

Hi Theokrat and cstrait001,

The issue has been corrected in the latest Norton Safety Minder 1.1.5.15.  Please check what version of Norton Safety Minder you are using and what version of Rhapsody you use.

Thanks,

Katie

KatieQ,

I am on the latest version of Norton Safety Minder, Rhapsody, and all available Microsoft patches.  I don't know if it is abnormal that the Framework and Datastore are at a different version than the Minder?

Norton Safety Minder Version 1.1.5.15
Norton Online Framework Version 1.1.5.14
Norton Datastore Version 1.1.5.14

Rhapsody v4.0 build 5.209

Windows 7 both x86 and x64 have this same problem.

Theokrat

Katie,

In case it matters I have Norton Internet Security 2010 (17.1.0.19) installed on my computers.

If I use the Administrator account I can play Rhapsody without any problems.

At one time I thought I was able to play Rhapsody on my daughter's account when Norton Safety Minder was disabled, but I just tried that a few minutes ago and she still has the same problem.

When I originally installed Rhapsody (after recently upgrading this computer to Windows 7) I was able to play songs on Rhapsody without any problems on her non-Administrator account.  But whenever Norton Safety Minder is installed that seems to interfere with Rhapsody.

Theokrat

KatieQ,

Over the weekend I reinstalled Norton Safety Minder (formerly Online Family Safety). As you said, this problem has been corrected. I played several songs on Rhapsody to completion, with none of the problems I first reported.

Thank you!

Chris

Hi Theokrat,

Thanks for the update.  Can you please uninstall and reinstall Norton Safety Minder to see if it helps?

Thanks,

Katie

Katie,

I first tried disabling Norton Safety Minder and logged onto my daughter's Standard account, but Rhapsody still did not work correctly.

I then removed Norton Safety Minder, rebooted the computer, and logged onto my daughter's account and Rhapsody worked normally.

I downloaded Norton Safety Minder from the Symantec website.  Same byte count and version as the program I previously installed.  After reinstalling all the version numbers were the same as my prior update.  When I logged onto my daughter's account Rhapsody still didn't work.

What next?

Theokrat

Katie,

FYI - I just did my annual NIS upgrade.  In the process of doing that I did an uninstall and reinstall of both NIS and Norton Family Safety.

I now have a newer version of Norton Family Safety and this one seems to have finally fixed the problem affecting Rhapsody.

Norton Safety Minder 1.2.0.39
Norton Online Framework Version 1.2.0.53
Norton Online Datastore Version 1.2.0.53

Theokrat

Theokrat,

Great.  Thanks for the update.

Thanks,

Katie
