Right-click menu disappears quickly on desktop

Hi,

I have Windows 7 Ultimate on a home desktop with Norton Internet Security 2010. Ever since I upgraded from Vista, anytime I right-clicked on my computer's desktop (whether on a specific file or not), the menu would appear for less than a second then disappear. It wasn't causing anything to crash, it just wouldn't stay on the screen long enough to select anything. However, if I was in a window such as Turbo Navigator, the right click menu worked fine. After disabling just about every shell extension, I upgraded from Norton 2008 to Norton 2010 and noticed that during the installation reboot, the menu started working, but the problem came back at the next restart.

I finally outright uninstalled Norton IS 2010 and now everything is back to normal and the desktop right-click works fine. Does anyone know of some other program which I may have running that's causing some interaction with Norton? I like the product suite and want to keep it, but can't if it causes this loss of functionality.

Thanks.

Colin

So you had NIS2008 on Vista when you upgrade to Windows 7. And later you uninstalled 2008, and installed 2010. Is that right?

If yes, did you run the Norton Removal Tool after the uninstall of 2008? If no, I would suggest to do that. It will clear every files and registry keys related with 2008, which is not compatible with Windows 7 as well (only an updated NIS2009, and the latest NIS2010 is fully compatible with Windows 7).
You can download the Norton Removal Tool from here: www.norton.com/nrt

If you reinstalled any of the NIS products remove them first via Add/Remove programs. Than reboot, run the downloaded NRT tool 2-3 times, reboot again, install 2010, and check the issue again.

Let us know the results.

Yes, that timeline is correct. I've just done as you recommended, I ran the NRT twice but as soon as I renistalled NIS2010, the issue came back. Thanks.

I think I found the conflicting program. I had a desktop calendar program called PTBSync and noticed that was acting weird whenever Norton was installed. When I removed that program and re-installed Norton, my right-click menu worked. I can live without that program so you can mark this as resolved. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Perkeo only you as the original poster can mark this is solved....:smileyhappy:
