Right click missing in NAV 11.0.3 and OS X 10.6.x

Is anyone else having the problem listed below?

I am missing the option to right click, and scan an item.

I wonder if this feature is missing in just this release of NAV, a bug, or an installation problem on my box?

I was about to post about the same issue. Right-click to scan works fine on my Leopard Mac Pro but not on my MacBook which has been upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I believe it is because of the way in which Contextual Menu Item support has changed in Snow Leopard. I believe insteading of adding a 'Contextual menu Item' plugin to \Library\Contexual Menu Items\, you have to use the new Services frameworks instead. My guess is that Symantec haven't updated NAV to use the new Services approach?

This change is documented on Apple's Developer Website:

"The contextual menu plug-in functionality is not available to 64-bit applications. CM plug-ins are ignored by 64-bit applications and never given a chance to add menu items to a contextual menu before it is displayed. In Mac OS X v10.6 and later, the recommended replacement is Cocoa services. Cocoa adds menu items provided by services to the contextual menus displayed by Cocoa applications."

Since the Finder is 64-bit in Snow Leopard the NAV CM item never loads!

Maybe one of the Symantec guys can comment on this issue? It's very useful functionality and I hope they will update NAV to support right-click scanning via Services under Snow Leopard.

Cheers,

Stuart

The poster above is correct. Unfortunately, contextual menu plug-ins are completely different on Snow Leopard. We are still investigating this issue. The replacement for Contextual Menus in Snow Leopard is "Services", but there are limitations to what Services can do compared to Contextual Menus. Unfortunately they are not as powerful as Contextual Menus were, but we are working on it.

I can't promise when it will return, but needless to say we are aware that it is broken on Snow Leopard. It's policy not to comment on what will be included in future releases, but we are looking to release several versions of Norton AntiVirus/Norton Internet Security that will improve performance, fix bugs and improve compatibility with Snow Leopard.

Also, the Services menu item
