Right Click on file causes Windows Explorer to crash!

I am not sure how this happened but if I right click on a file in Windows Explorer (Not IE...) it crashes Windows Explorer. This seems to be extension specific as a .ZIP file will let me right click and allow me to unzip, or scan etc.

I know NIS2009 adds a shell extension to Windows Explorer, and short of using Freeware Shellexview, does anyone know the exact context menu handler to disable?

Do you have the PowerDesk file manager installed? If so they have a fix for this due to some coding in their product (which I use).

If you do then let us know and I'll give you the link to the fix which is not easy to find.

Oh and please let us know the version of WIndows you are using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 6t4 bit.

Please also give the version ID of your NIS 2009 -- Help / About and the version ID has the format nn.nn.nn.nnn -- give the full code.

I use XP Pro SP3 (32 Bit) and NIS2009 16.5.0.134.

I do have an OLD PowerDesk installed but not being used. I also have Explorer+. However, I do have a NEW PowerDesk that I never installed. Perhaps I could use the fix. This is strange as my wife is using the same software and she is not having the issue. Why would Windows Explorer crash as well. Can this also cause FireFox 3.0.7 to crash on shutdown?

Come to think of it, my wife does NOT have an old version of PowerDesk on her system...just Explorer+.

Anyway, perhaps I can try that link to the fix.

TIA

I wrote the full instructions below before I re-read your message and saw that you had Explorer Plus installed (as I used to having used the Mijenix version since it came out) so I don't know that the Avantquest fix will work. But I'll leave it for the moment.

The easy solution would be to uninstall Explorer Plus -- possibly using RevoUninstaller which uses the uninstall module the application supplies but can then (it's optional) go way beyond that in cleaning up left-overs. That should remove the registry entry that causes the Context Menu error.

I use PowerDesk all the time because of how it simplifies drag and drop with its two windows (Shades of Norton Desktop for Windows) and its other features but that's up to you.

If you decide just to remove Explorer Plus and that clears the problem that's fine. If you want to keep Explorer Plus and fix the problem let us know and I'll look out the Registry alteration. If you decide to remove Explorer Plus and install PD7 I hope it goes well.

Let us know whichever ....

AVANTQUEST ONLY

According to Avantquest the fix applies to PD 6 & 7, although that may not mean that the problem does not go back earlier!

I can't find a URL that always goes direct to the solution but try this one:

http://kb.avanquestusa.com/al/12/1/article.aspx?aid=4030&tab=search&bt=4&r=

but sometimes that comes up with a blank page unless you are already on the Avantquest USA website.

If that does not take you to a document 4030 PowerDesk crashes when right-clicking on some files and folders. then follow this route:

Go to:

http://kb.avanquestusa.com/display/4/search.aspx?tab=search

and scroll down to the second part of topics until you see that document by name and click on it to go to the contents.

Whichever way, I suggest you print out the document so you have the instructions in front of you. The instructions are very clear and include how to download the fix:

Scroll down to the end of the document and you will see

 Attachments

with a paper clip at the left.

Follow the instructions to download the file that is there. Make sure you Save the file and know where it is on your hard drive.

I hope that fixes the problem -- it did for me. If it does not then do the Check they give to see if those files are as they should be.

If they are not then come back and I'll tell you what I had to do on a second installation when the wizard did not work.

Thank you. The PD that I have installed is PD5. However, I may be able to just use REVO (Great util that I always use) to remove PD and see if Explorer Plus will then work. As I said, I installed Explorer Plus on her system and it WORKS...but she never did have PD5 on hers as I just built hers a few Months ago.

OH, None of the links come up that you gave. Perhaps the site is VERY slow?

***UPDATE***

I went to kb.avanquestusa.com and typed 4030 in the search box...It came up so I will take a look.

Sorry the links did not work.

Try this which should be infallible!

Go to

http://www.avanquest.com/USA/index.html

Click on [PowerDesk] on the top blue bar which lists:

  • SystemSuite  Fix It  Web Easy  VCOM  PowerDesk   Driver Genius  MySoftware  Bookkeeper
  •

On the bar on the PowerDesk page, where it says [Description]  click on More at the right then on Support making sure the mouse pointer is lined up so it turns into a hand.

You should get a screen with

    Support

    http://kb.avanquestusa.com/

on it so click on that URL

You should then get the listing with the second section that mentions PowerDesk and takes you to the document.

Thank you. As I said, this let me get the info.

    >>>I went to kb.avanquestusa.com and typed 4030 in the search box...It came up so I will take a look.

I may first just REVO PD5 first. I will let you know.

Well, I removed PD5 with REVO and did a reboot. Both Explore and ExplorerPlus still fail. I wonder if I need to reinstall ExplorerPlus, or go to PD7? Do you think an install of PD7 with the fix file will resolve this? Perhaps once this is broken, Explorer Plus needs a new install to fix it.

When you uninstalled PD5 with Revo did you run all 4 stages?

Do you have the installation file for ExplorerPlus?

Are you comfortable looking in the Registry -- after backing it up -- and editing an entry there if you can find it for ExplorerPlus?

Let me know and meanwhile I'll dig out the Registry key information, as it applied to PD7 and you can see if you can find an equivalent statement for ExplorerPlus -- the modification is childishly simple once you find the line in the Registry.

This started happening to me with the latest NIS 2009 update. I have Powerdesk 7. The patch seems to have fixed it.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad it worked for you.

Thank you. The answer to ALL of the above is YES. Also, I did a TrueImage restore and may try to just execute the file that gives me the new PDSHEXT.DLL even though I have PD5 installed. It would be nice if there were key(s) I could change in the reg. Anyway, let me try to just add the new .DLL.

    ******UPDATE*****

I did add the new DLL, and although it did not hurt anything it did not fix anything either. I can still right click a zip, but little else.

It's not enough to ADD the new PDSHEXT.DLL file; you have to, with PD6 & 7 anyway, rename the old one and then add the new one which the Wizard does automatically but I had, the last time, to do manually for some reason.

If it accepted yours without renaming I would guess that that means the ExplorerPlus does not use such a file or one with a different name.

Here's an extract from the message Re: Norton 360 V2 vista sp1 support  which Symantec posted with the workaround for the problem with PowerDesk while Avanquest were writing the fix.

Finally, I can offer a workaround that will allow you to have both Norton 360 v2.0 and PowerDesk installed and working properly for both. The steps involve working with the registry and renaming the PowerDesk context handler so that it loads last.

Here are the steps to work around the current issue (this is a temporary solution)

NOTE: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems with your system, proceed at your own risk and ensure you have backed up your registry prior to editing.

    1. Run regedit
    2. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\PowerDesk Menu
    3. Right click on "PowerDesk Menu" and rename to "zPowerDesk Menu" (this will force it to load last)
    4. Exit regedit

So I would suggest following that path but looking for ExplorerPlus entries, in the ContextHandlers section, and the "Menu" one to zExplorerPlus.

Then work your way back out and reboot.

If that does not do it I'd uninstall ExplorerPlus using Revo and all 4 stages and see that the context menu works OK. If it does I'd switch to PowerDesk and apply the fix.

    FWIW

    Good luck!

Fixed...I went to the freebie shell SHEXVIEW. I did put a z infront of the reg entry and that fixed ExplorerPlus. Also, the patch file did make 3 dll's in PD5.

    Thank you

Thanks for the feed back -- glad it worked.

Any reason for sticking with ExplorerPlus? My reason for switching was when Mijenix folded so that there was no more development and VISTA was coming -- plus an offer one could not refuse to get PD 7 for $9.95 IIRC.

Either are streets ahead of using Windows Explorer and PD has some very nice features in it.

First...where did the ICONS go, like Resolved and Kudos, today.

Also, I spoke a little too soon. Most is working OK again, but if I right click on a Directory, it still crashes. All else seems OK. I stuck with Explorer Plus as it is working for us. I wonder if they still have the $9.95 deal?

Good question! Probably maintenance at work ....

Sounds like you should uninstall ExplorerPlus with Revo and see if the Right Click works again. If it does then use PD -- I know several who still use PD 6.

Get yourself on the Avanquest email list and you'll know if it comes on offer; if I spot it I'll try and remember to let you know.

Well, I do have PD6...just not installed. Anyway, I can try SHELLEXVIEW to disable some of the items on it. GREAT tool...you may want to take a look!

My ExplorerPlus IS working...just have this one item left that does not work...a right click on a directory.

I will see what  I find with ShellExView.

Nirsoft are OK -- I've used some of their stuff but I don't mess with things like ShellEx since I don't know about them.

I don't know that one wants to disable the item involved in this case; the workaround involves putting in the "z" so that that particular one comes up last.

You seem to be saying that you have fixed files but not "directories" (folders?).

Did you read the article that NirSoft linked to?

Did you choose the right part of the registry to modify:

    HKCR \*\shellex\contextmenuhandlers Files

HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex\ contextmenuhandlers Files and file folders

Rather than spend all this time on a dead-end product I would think it better to install PD6 then the fix for it and if you get a chance for a good deal on PD7 (or PD8 if there ever is one) then go for that.
