dave, the Dell that I made this thread about, (I'm on the sony now, and it's a desktop, not latop FWIW) passed the manufacturer diagnosis.
the XP CDs are genuine, just copies.

sc,
I'd suggest that nothing you do to this PC will make it other than sluggish as long as it has 256MB of RAM -- Crucial is a good source if you let it detect the right kind of RAM since they guarantee it will work and give a lifetime warranty.
Here's the 650 which I find there: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=VAIO%20PCV-RX650&Cat=RAM
2 x 512MB for $38 and scrap the 256MB you have. But even 1GB with XP won't sparkle but it won't crawl.
And I'd certainly look at replacing the present hard drive:
Here's the spec sheet for the PC http://www.docs.sony.com/release/specs/PCVRX651_sp.pdf
Hard Disk Drive
C / D Partition (Approximate) 80 GB ATA-100
C = 16 GB / D = 64 GB
You can get a new 250GB for less than the old 80GB would cost to replace:
Western Digital WD Blue WD2500AAJB 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive -- $80

You are trying to do a clean install of Windows XP on this desktop computer? I take it you never made and it's too late to make the recover disk the instructions refer to and too late to make recovery media from a hidden partition on the PC?
Anyway if you are going to follow the instructions for a clean installation do for goodness sake follow what they say especially:
<< Download driver updates (for the original factory-installed software) for your computer model from the Sony eSupport Web site at http://www.sony.com/pcsupport.
CAUTION: You must install the driver packages in the following order for your computer to operate normally: >>
I doubt that you need do anything about RAID since if you had this configuration you would know about it and it really is not advantageous for normal users.

My 'new' PC's way worse than the other. You can kind of skip the whole thread if you haven't read it and start here if you want to help.
It's a Sony Vaio PCV-RX651 80G HD, 256MB ram, 1.72ghz running XP.
[stuff deleted in the interests of brevity]
Drivers for my PC link: Suggestions? Looks like the important ones in the other link are missing from what they offer me.
I installed the fan one and it stopped running so loud. The other I tried said I 'need SP1 installed. please DL it from link' and I have sP3.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVRX651&template_id=1®ion_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTabSince I don't have a VAIO CD, do I need to get one even if I don't want the VAIO programs? Same with burning a Sony Shared Library insstall CD? Those programs seem like things I don't even need/can just download something similar if I do. I'm basically fine with just plain windows and adobe flash and reader.
Maybe I can save the PC I made this thread about too.
f6 to instlall RAID driver?
Thank you.
This machine is in the same class as the one you originally posted about - but the amount of installed memory is even worse than the amount mentioned in your original posts.
Furthermore, according to the specsheet - the max amount of installable memory for this box is 1GB.
Then, there is the matter of Sony's proprietary "stuff" for this machine. You do not just format a machine with proprietary
"stuff". You do your research and figure out what to do before you monkeydiddle.
This is another box which is not worth resurrecting. Give it up and get hardware worth owning. You're trying to run the Baja 500 in a 1957 Volkswagen Beetle - and expecting to win against entrants in 2012. Doesn't work.
