Run Disk Optimization not working

Despite rebooting several times since the original problem, "run disk optimization" still gives me a strange error message - "Drive C: Error: Not completed" and doesn't do anything else.  I've even tried re-installung Norton.  Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Hi again!

Did the Windows Disk Optimize - subsequently ran Norton again.  Still "Drive C: Error - Not Completed" shows up.

Got any other ideas?

What I would do is uninstall Norton ...use the Norton removal tool  (nrt) and reinstall Norton...be sure to back up your idenity safe data before you uninstall Norton...see if this helps...good luck

Open a command line and run the following

defrag C: /U /V

If it comes back with an error about no disk space you will have to delete all files from

C:\Windows\Prefetch

I had this same issue and it seems there may be a problem with your prefetch files.  If you aren't familiar with what these files do, simply put, they allow a quicker load of windows as these files deal with what you typically start up (e.g. Norton).  This fix took about 20 minutes and then waiting nearly two hours for confirmation that optimization works.

Here's a link to my post on this if it helps:

Either way let me know how it goes!

FWIW I use CCleaner from time to time and it has Prefetch files as one of the items you can check to get removed.

In my experience Disabling Norton Antivirus Autopretect  for the duration greatly speeds up the time CCleaner takes to scan the system so I do that and thinking of that makes me wonder if one should also Disable it while defragging, or is that built into Norton already?

Here's a discusssion on the CCleaner Forums about cleaning pretetch that people may find interesting.

OK got rid of the "Prefetch" files and subsequently tried defrag using your "defrag C: /U /V" method.  Even if I reboot into command prompt mode, if I type defrag C: /U /V nothing happens.  Any ideas now?

I use CCleaner quite a bit, and tried it again in order to fix this stupid disk optimization program error message.  Still no effects.
