When I open the main Minecraft.exe, the update page does not show up. Instead, at the top of the screen it says: <html><body><font color="#808080"><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><center>Failed to update news<br>java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect</center></font></body></html>
My kids has an account with no adm. rights. If I log into my adm. account, even I can't play the game.

Yes, this is correct; my adm. account is NOT monitored by NSM. Therefore it is rather strange that it is not possible to play the game at my account either.
But, there is a issue related to NSM; this afternoon, I tried again to play the game on my adm. account. As usual, it was not possible, received the message as in my first post. Then I uninstalled NSM, and NSM told me to restart computer. Before restarting, I tried the game again, and then it worked! In my case, I will not use NSM until this issue is fixed.
Please help our team to reproduce the issue by providing the following information for us.
1. Type of Operating System and version(for example, Windows XP SP3 etc…)
2.Type of Web Browser and version(for example, IE9)
3.Norton Safety Minder Version (you can determine this by right clicking on the Norton Safety Minder icon in the System tray and selecting About Norton Safety Minder).
4.Any other Anti-Virus or Security product installed (please provide version information)
I can confirm that this is also happening to my computers. (The Norton Safety Minder program breaks Minecraft). And I had to uninstall in order to get Minecraft working again.
Thanks for the update. Is it possible that you could provide answers for the questions I mentioned in my previous post, so we can investigate the issue further.

This is because minecraft is a Java 7 application, and NSM doesnt seem to play well with Java 7.
Hopefully you guys can get this issue fixed soon, as it has been a problem for at least 4 months for me, though im glad I now know it is not a problem with my machine, but with NSM.
The issue is due to an compatibility of Norton and Java 7. If you downgrade to Java 6 and completely remove 7, then install Norton and Minecraft it should work. That will only work as long as you can survive without Java 7, but works. It's a pain and I wish it would be fixed.
I have had the same problem. I always run the 1.7 version of Java with all of my applications and what is especially interesting is that Minecraft seems to be running okay on one of my 4 machines with NSM installed. The other two fail. I don't have a cut and paste, but when I went and launched the minecraft.jar from command line, it showed numerous errors with http connections. But, I don't get any alerts in NOF. Also, I don't block any content for my kids accounts, just log it, so that surprises me that anything would fail.
I will try backing down to 1.6 Java to see if it fixes things and pull together more specific details of my situation tonight and post them. Really don't like 1.6 Java though, so that would be a bummer.
