Safety minder is messing with (the game) MINECRAFT

Hi all!

When I open the main Minecraft.exe, the update page does not show up. Instead, at the top of the screen it says: <html><body><font color="#808080"><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><center>Failed to update news<br>java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect</center></font></body></html>

My kids has an account with no adm. rights. If I log into my adm. account, even I can't play the game.

Uninstalling NSM, and MINECRAFT works again.

Any suggestion?

Thanks and regards,

Olex

Hi Katie!

Many thanks for your reply.

Sorry, I forgot to tell; I have downloaded and run the MINECRAFT.exe application.

I am pretty sure that the problem is caused by NSM. As I already have mentioned, the game work if I uninstall NSM.

Thanks and regards,

Olex

Olex,

Do you see any activities logged related to minecraft when running Minecraft.exe at Web -> Activity online?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi Katie!

No, there is no activities logged related to minecraft when running Minecraft.exe.

Olex

Olex,

When you said "If I log into my adm. account, even I can't play the game".  I assume  your account is not monitored by Norton Safety Minder, right?

Thanks,

Katie

Yes, this is correct; my adm. account is NOT monitored by NSM. Therefore it is rather strange that it is not possible to play the game at my account either.

But, there is a issue related to NSM; this afternoon, I tried again to play the game on my adm. account. As usual, it was not possible, received the message as in my first post. Then I uninstalled NSM, and NSM told me to restart computer. Before restarting, I tried the game again, and then it worked! In my case, I will not use NSM until this issue is fixed.

Thanks and regards,

Olex

I can confirm that this is also happening to my computers.   (The Norton Safety Minder program breaks Minecraft).   And I had to uninstall in order to get Minecraft working again.

Hi tigerjet,

Thanks for the update.  Is it possible that you could provide answers for the questions I mentioned in my previous post, so we can investigate the issue further.

Thanks,

Katie

tigerjet,

Thanks for the update.  I'll pass the information to the team.

Thanks,

Katie

i can also confirm that minecraft throws the same errors for me on my win7 machine.

I believe this error is also related:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Online-Family/Norton-Safety-Minder-won-t-let-Java-run/td-p/728064

This is because minecraft is a Java 7 application, and NSM doesnt seem to play well with Java 7.

Hopefully you guys can get this issue fixed soon, as it has been a problem for at least 4 months for me, though im glad I now know it is not a problem with my machine, but with NSM.

Dessieman,

Thanks for the information.  I'll sure let the team know about this.

Thanks,

Katie

The issue is due to an compatibility of Norton and Java 7.  If you downgrade to Java 6 and completely remove 7, then install Norton and Minecraft it should work.  That will only work as long as you can survive without Java 7, but works.  It's a pain and I wish it would be fixed.

This thread actually talks about the long standing Java 7 incompatibility.

I have had the same problem.  I always run the 1.7 version of Java with all of my applications and what is especially interesting is that Minecraft seems to be running okay on one of my 4 machines with NSM installed.  The other two fail.  I don't have a cut and paste, but when I went and launched the minecraft.jar from command line, it showed numerous errors with http connections.  But, I don't get any alerts in NOF.  Also, I don't block any content for my kids accounts, just log it, so that surprises me that anything would fail.

I will try backing down to 1.6 Java to see if it fixes things and pull together more specific details of my situation tonight and post them.  Really don't like 1.6 Java though, so that would be a bummer.

Hi callahanb,

Please let us know if that resolves the issue for you.

Thanks,

Katie
