Twice last week I saw “Safety Minder Is Not Running” in the all activity tab. After talking to my daughter, I really don’t believe she knows the password to turn it off. I’m running XP and she has her own profile. She doesn’t know the password to log onto the computer. My wife or I log her on. Can she turn off Norton Safety Minder some other way when logged on under her profile? Even if she new the Norton PW, is it possible for her to disable it while she was logged on under her profile (since she is not an administrator?) I have not allowed her back on until I can determine why Safety Minder stopped running.
Just logged on under my daughter's profile and saw that Safety Minder can be disabled by her if she had the PW. I disabled it, logged off and logged on under my profile. When I looked at the "All Activity" tab the message is see is "Norton Safety Minder was disabled on a computer", not "Safety Minder Is Not Running."
So this tells me that something else stopped Safety Minder from running and it may have not been my daughter intentionally doing it. Any help/advice would greatly be appreciated.
Just looked at the email messages I got on January 3rd when I saw the "Safety Minder Is Not Running" message in the activity tab. Below is the message:
Norton Safety Minder on XXXXXXX PC used by Xxxxxx has been disabled. As you know, Norton Safety Minder is required on every computer monitored by OnlineFamily.Norton.
Received the same message when I intentionally disabled it this morning.
I haven't had to use this support forum often. But when I did it seem a Norton rep was pretty prompt in replying (usually same day.) Kind of surprised I haven't had a response. Has this become more of a "everyone help each other" forum versus factory support?
Its the weekennd so not many people will be on to help you.You will get help as soon as they get back.
I have the exact same problem and was told it was fixed in the latest update but it appears not.I also still get child logged out when they sign into thier account.
Bagger,
What version of Norton Safety Minder do you have installed on the PC? The latest version is 1.2.0.39. You can find it by right clicking on the NSM icon (a dog paw) in the system tray and selecting About Norton Safety Minder.
harry10,
Thanks for your input.
Thanks,
Katie
I'm running the .39 version. However, the day I discovered the NSM was shutting down, I also got a automatic upgrade. I guess what I'm saying is that these two cases of NSM shutting itself down could have occured prior to the .39 upgrade.
I just looked at my daughters activity from last night. Apparently she was at YouTube and typed in some search words that defintiely should have been flagged for adult content. The text in the activity line was not red, I didn't get an email notification and to the far right there are none of those arrows that allows you to expand the line. In the past I have gotten email when she tried to view inappropriate YouTube videos. Why didn't I this time? What's it telling me when no arrows are to the far right in that activity line? Was she able to view the adult content?
Thanks
One more thing...on the activity page, why does it state "Logged out of machine" in the spot where th person has actually logged on. There is nothing posted when the person actaully logs off. The last line for that day contains the last site she was at. Do I have something wrong in my settings?
Bagger,
Thanks for the update.
Please make sure you have the Safe Search supervision On on the online family website. What it does is it forces a Safe Search on the search engines, like Google, Youtube, Yahoo…. For Youtube, if you have the Safe Search supervision ON on OnlineFamily.Norton and when your daughters log into Youtube, it’s up to the Safe Search systems that Youtube has to determine what content is inappropriate and needs to be blocked.
We are aware of "Logged out of machine" message issue and working on it actively. Thanks,Katie
Safety Search was already turned on. In the past I have gotten notices that she tried to view inappropriate YouTube videos. After reading your reply and seeing that my setting are configured correctly, I’m really concerned why we didn’t get them last night. Any idea why the arrows on the far right weren’t present?
Bagger,
For search feature, NSM forces the Safe Search on on Youtube and after the kids log onto Youtube, Youtube determines a video is inappropriate or not.
Thanks,
Katie
Thanks…Did not realize NSM relied on YouTube for content filtering when on their site. So I assume YouTube has visiblity to the the NSM settings checked on the “web activity” page and filters accordingly? Do other search engines operate this way as well? I now have been getting NSM alerts on video’s she has attempted to view on YouTube. There may have been some problems a few weeks back when I wasn’t getting them but should have. FYI…Had another Client Turned OFF advisory Thursday night while my daughter was logged on. Thanks
Hi Bagger,
For other search engines, ex Google, Norton Safety Minder will force the Safe Search on Google.com. The screen snap below shows you how the search option looks like on the Google website.
I will like to ask a question. Does the Safety Minder have a history log, can the kids access them if they have the password?
Yes…activity log has a history and with the password they can see it…and much more. What if they don’t have PC admin rights? Not sure.
