...no, I'm leaving the drive still attached to the computer once the backup is complete.

...even just browsing the drive there are the folders and files created by the backup.. which is strange, because when I do a full backup to a different fixed HDD it just created one big file for the whole backup.

....There are no warning or errors, it just asks to label the media once it is complete.

.... liveupdate has been run, norton save and restore V11.02, build 20309, windows XP, sp2

Today I done a backup of "documents and settings" folder to a removable HDD, backup completed with no errors, but there is no recovery point listed, even if I import a location, it can't find this backup, is there something i'm missing?

How did you try to see if there was a FIle and Folder Recovery point? Or what are the steps  that you used to get there?

And if you were in the Recover My Files dialog, did you click on Search? (It is not always obvious that you always need to do this in order to see files from the File and Folder backups.)

....I've been in to save and restore, (recover files), - recovery from the LH side, recover my files, then file -> import backup location, browsed to the removable HDD, selected the folder when the files are, then ok... no recover points found.

If I select "use recovery points", only the full backupand incremental backups are listed, the backup of the selected files and folders (in this case c:\my documents) isn't listed

OK, I think I understand what is happening.  In the Recover My Files dialog, there are two things listed under Search Methods, File and Folder and Recovery Point.  This is for the two different kinds of backups that NSR does.  Since you have a job that backs up just C:\My Documents, it has to be a File and Folder backup job as the other type of backup gets the whole partition (for most people, think hard drive).

So, to find a file that was backed up with C:\My Documents job, you need to click on File and Folder under Search Methods, then in the search field below the text that says 'Find Files to Recover' you need to enter the filename or part of the file name.  If you want all files, leave it blank.  Next you need to click on the Search button on the right hand side.  Until you click on Search, you won't see anything listed.

The File | Import Backup Destination that you have been using is used for a different reason.  It is used to add files to the index that File and Folder backup maintains or to rebuild the index if something bad should happen to it.  And even after using this function, you still have to do the things mentioned in the previous paragraph to have things show up.

Are you removing the drive, then re-attaching it to the system and no recovery points are found? Where are you looking for the recovery points: within NSR or within the drive itself?

Norton Save & Restore reports all warnings and errors to the Windows Event log. Could you look at the application event logs and check for any warnings/errors from NSR, Ghost Service, V2i, Volume Shadow Copy Service, etc? Have you run LiveUpdate in NSR until there are no more updates? Which version are you using on which operating system? All this information will be helpful in finding the cause of the issue. Thanks!
