Further investigation indicated that when trying to create backup on harddrive, it works on normal speed. Also performance slider is available (it was disabled when I tried to back up to DVD). While this doesn’t describe why it slows down when making DVD backups. The only clue is that before creating first backup, S&R warns me that CD/DVD backups ‘are not ideal’ and suggests that I attach an USB harddrive. So, the only realistic reason for them to slow down DVD backups is if they were bribed by portable harddrive and flash drive manufacturers, to increase their sales.

Now I’m going to get an USB drive for my backups. While this is not the exact solution that I wanted, as there are ‘hidden costs’ involved. But, generally, USB drives are easier to use. For example there are drives with space enough to store all of my data, and still there will be left some to create incremental backups. So I won’t need to deal with multiple-disk backups. Also it seems like S&R is specially optimized for this type of backups. I’ll let you know what happens next.

And yes, I still think that I was misguided for another time. No one warned me that S&R is not intended for DVD backups and works best with USB drive backups. Symantec’s marketing needs to work better, as in its current state, the site does NOT help me make right decisions about which product to purchase.

I'm using NSR 2.0. I've tried a couple other backup programs, and they all were much slower at backing up to CD/DVD than to an external USB drive. Plus, you can't schedule a backup to removable media.

One of the problems with DVD backups is buffering the data, but that's no real problem with USB drives.

You will find, however, that after NSR says the backup is complete that your external hard drive light will continue to flash for a bit while your computer's memory finishes dumping the data to the drive.

External USB drives are inexpensive now. It'll give you a lot of flexibility. For example, I put "trash" files there that I don't care if I lose and don't want to bother backing up with my main system. You'll be happy you got one!

Well, I helped me for another time. I’ve purchased an USB drive and created backup set there, and it worked even faster than Nero’s DVD backups. Also there’s enough space to store enough file versions for about 2-3 weeks back or even more, and I don’t have to bother with multiple-disk sets. Also I could store my collection of drivers and downloaded software there…

But Symantec Marketing, still be warned. There was NO clues that DVD backups aren’t usable with Save and Restore, I’ve had to figure it myself…

BTW, talk about marketing… I still get promo mailings with 360 upgrade offer, which I won’t purchase because I don’t like that product. Well, if you want me to really buy from Symantec then offer discount on SystemWorks! =))))

I'm happy that everything worked out well for you.  It took me almost 30 hours to back-up a  hard drive with 68 gigs on it,  for no obvious reason. Backing up with Acronis to DVDs was more labor intensive but much faster.  I am using a relatively fast dual core processor under XP (SP2) and backing up to an almost empty 250 gig external hard drive  and set the backup to run at the fastest speed.  The computer HD light flashed  almost continuouysly, the light on the external flashed for a few second about twice a minute. What have other users noted as typical back up times/ gig ?  I'm happy I have a backup of my hard drive (I think), when I click on Save and Restore it tells me I don't have a backup, but the external drive says I have a 68 gig file there. The process was  quite an ordeal and my wife was just about ready to leave me by the time it was done. ( The computer is in the bedroom.) Ideas gratefully accepted.
