Scam

just bought a new Norton Licence key....  followed the instructions on the Licence card and logged onto http://www.norton.com/setup which is written on the licence card. on the Norton looking site I was asked to Input my   Name.  Tel no, email, Licence key...  which seemed unusual.   I did this and an error message came up on the screen...as below

An Error Has Occurred: N0740E:

Your key has been redeemed successfully but the setup could not be started.

within 5 mins an indian sounding gentleman called me to advise me I had an issue loading Norton...

He supposedly looked up the error message and I had an issue with the drives on my computer which he needed to have access to my computer to fix. I said he would never get access to my comp and he hung up immediately.

The burning question I have here is how the hell did I end up on this Norton looking scam site from a store bought Norton product???    As soon as he called I thought it was a scam but others may believe and get caught...   and how many others have experienced the same thing.....

this is the page I ended upon ...      http :// officeandhomedecor . com/office/Welcome/

Any answers would be good

cheers Dave S

Hi Chieko,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Is there a problem with your Norton software that we can help you with here? Though it may not have been a scam, I think you were wise in not paying the money.

Please let us know if there is some problem we might be able to assist with.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hello

There are like 7 pages in Google with listings for that company. They claim to be the support for every security program out there just about and support for many things having to do with computers I see. Different brands of computers also.

Hi Chieko

                   You wrote ................

[They already got into my computer but I refused to accept their push in the end.  Is my computer still safe, or did they get my data and information?]

There is a legit outfit under the VN name ....however ...I've heard from more than one person that they have had approaches from this company.... and they had the same concerns regarding wether they had been compromised or not ?

I thorougly checked out their machines for any signs of malware ...and neither showed any evidence of any tampering that indicated any mischief ...so hopefully ..your fears may be unfounded !  ....

Keep a watch for any strange behaviour or anything that may indicate that things aren't as they should be though.....and let us know if you have any concerns !

I wouldn't be happy to trust a company who uses the uninvited approach you seem to have been subjected to ....it isn't a very ethical practice to carry out "fixes and solution " matters in this way ! .You were right by being wary and refusing the offer !

Carry on being cautious if you suspect any offer of service that gives you cause for doubt ! Just ask if you have any further problems  !

I just got connected to so called Norton Security Tech support.  They used Teamviewer software to get into my computer and told me that I need to pay $299.00 for them to fix the program I had and to give me two year support service.  Is it regitimate?  They already got into my computer but I refused to accept their push in the end.  Is my computer still safe, or did they get my data and information?

what he was doing but  got into my credit cards and told me to mail the money to an address saying it was Nortons money.  Like a dumbass I did it.

Another example of complications of purchases from eBay. There are a lot of scammers out there that resell used keys. Only purchase from reputable/known retailers.

Were you charged anything when you allowed them to connect to your system and 'repair' things? If so, dispute any charges with your credit card company.
