I am running the Comcast-provided version (5.2.0.13) of Norton Security Suite on a Windows 7 64-bit Dell desktop. Last night I started a manual scan, and when I checked this morning, it had not completed running the AV scan. I looked at the Norton "Tasks" screen and it showed that the PC had, in fact, gone to sleep while Norton was running. I started a new scan, left for 40 minutes, and when I came back it had done the exact same thing. I have one other desktop running 32-bit Win 7, same version of Norton, and it had no problem running a scan to completion. I haven't had any problem running it on a 64-bit Acer laptop either.
I checked the Power management settings, and there is nothing different there between the two PCs except that the 64-bit machine has a screen saver password enabled. But this should not affect the scan??
THe last time I manually ran a scan was a month ago, and it completed in about 1 hour with no problems. THere have been two Windows updates since then.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem? I realize I could try to rollback to a restore point and troubleshoot, but I am hoping there is some known issue I've overlooked. I've already checked for new Windows updates and updated my graphics card driver.
Thank you for the reply - yes, the other post is me as well, sorry about that. My response below is identical to the one posted over there....)
No, I am not using a screensaver.
In order to force the manual scan to complete, I went into Power Management and turned Sleep to "Never". The scan ran and completed in 18 minutes. I went back into the scan history, and I am now wondering how long this behavior has been going on. The last scan I see from a month ago took almost 10 hours, so I was mistaken about that one. Prior full manual scans took anywhere from 22 minutes to almost 6 hours.
One the other PC, scans also vary in time to completion, but the scan I ran yesterday afternoon took about an hour, and the Tasks view shows that it started, ran for a while, ran while the PC was Idle, and finished normally. Only then a while later did that PC go to sleep.
Shouldn't a manual scan keep the system awake so that it can complete? What am I missing? Strangely, enough, the Idle System Scans seem to be running just fine, taking around an hour to scan 600,000+ files.
i dont know if this helps but i run a NIS 2012 and at a manual scan has on the botom an option" on scan completion the computer should" and u have 3 options stay on ,turnoff and sleep check that setting maybe its set diferent then normal
Jen is running Comcast Norton Security Suite (V5) which is still the 2011 version. There is no dropdown, nor options other than being able to select the option to "shutdown computer upon completion". The options you have in NIS 2012, should also be available in NSS once V 6 is available for Comcast customers.
I am still puzzled why Jen states she is not running any screensavers - but also states that one system has a screensaver password??
I'm not running a screensaver - if I check in Control Panel (or right-click on the desktop and select Personalize), screensaver is set to none. In the Power Options, the plan is set to require a password on wakeup. Turning this to "No" didn't make any difference, I assume because the problem is the PC going to sleep, rather than being unable to wake up. Am I wrong in assuming a manually triggered scan should keep the PC awake until it completes?
Let's see if we can get to the same place and do some testing on this. Please bear with me, but I want to make sure we are both on the same page:
Please click on Start > Control Panel > Power Options > I have Recommended Settings (Recommended) selected. From there, I then click on Change Plan Settings. The next page has a Change advanced Power Settings option towards the bottom of the page. Select it and then yu should see a page similar to this:
From there select the Sleep Option and the Sleep After Option and you should see where you can change the time required for it to go to sleep.
What I am suggesting is not so much making sure both of your systems are set to the same length of time to start sleep, as I am concerned about the system giving you trouble having sufficent time to compete the scan prior to going to sleep. You can increase that tme and see if it permits the scan to complete or not prior to sleeping.
Yes, I would think that the system would not go into sleep while the scan was running - but I have seen stranger things. I have a Vista laptop running NIS 2012 that Idle Full Time Scans start in the background while I am in the process of doing 2nd Tuesday Windows updates.
Yes, I can either do as you suggest, and set the sleep timer to a longer period or even shut it off temporarily in the first Power Options screen in Control Panel (which is what I ended up doing!) and the scan will complete without the computer going to sleep. I just have to remember to change it back afterward, since I like the PC to sleep after 30 minutes. Not that much of a hassle, more of a minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things!!
This seems odd to me, I would have thought the fact that a scan was running would keep the PC awake!! But it seems like this version of Norton isn't really made to run these type of full-system ad hoc scans, we are just supposed to "set it and forget it" and maybe just occasionally scan downloaded files individually?

Thanks again,

Hi Jen,
The key point here may be that the sleep mode is controlled by the operating system, not Norton. Norton is usually aware of activities, it suspends scans when you start doing things with the keyboard & mouse, etc. When the reverse is true then you will be better able to set and forget things.
Hope this helps. We'll be here when you need us. Til then
