Scanning for problems

I would like to scan my CD’s before I install them, to make sure they are safe.  If I disable “Auto-Play”, insert a CD and scan with NIS 2009, would it detect any Malware on the CD or would I have to click on install and hope NIS caught any problems?  I guess I’m asking is what is the best way to make sure a CD/DVD is safe to install.

If auto play is disabled, you should be able to go into custom scan and tell Norton to scan whatever is in that drive.  I discovered, as well, that if you accidentally leave a disc in the CD/DVD drive and a full idle time scan starts, it will scan it as part of the full system scan.

Hi PC_confused,

Auto-Protect- the Real-Time-Protection in your Norton program scans all files that are received from any source, such as the Internet, removable disks, or email attachments. Auto-Protect scans files for viruses, Trojan horses, and worms any time that the files are accessed from the removable media like CD/DVD/Pen drives/External HDD, such as when they are copied, moved, run, or opened. Auto-Protect intercepts any run, open, or create activity and scans the file before allowing the action to continue. These scans are transparent to the user and have little, if any, noticeable effect on system performance. There is also Removable Media Scan which will scan the file/folder for boot viruses whenever it is accessed. So, you are very much Safe to use the CD/DVD and Norton assures that your computer is protected always.

Thank y'all for both answers.  Sounds like getting a malware problem from installing a CD, with updated NIS 2009, is a remote possibility.
