Scareware section in Jan. 2012 Club Norton newsletter

I found the section on scareware way too general, with no specific examples given. Recently I almost lost my computer to the "XP Home Security 2012" virus or scareware. It got to the point where I couldn't get on the internet except by clicking on the Norton Internet Security icon on my desktop. The nasty bugger had gotten by the current level of Norton security I have, but with help I was able to use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program, downloaded from Bleepingcomputer.com, to get rid of it. I first had  to get my computer in safe mode though. The experience was a good reminder that one can't rely on one source for his/her computer security needs. I had gotten lazy....I should note I never clicked "OK" or downloaded anything from "XP Home Sec...," but it was still able to download itself, at least in part, onto my computer.  So take care all.

2 days ago my laptop was attacked by scareware.  The scareware looked like a message from Norton...said my system was critically vulernable to viruses and that I must purchase their virus prevention software immediately.  It rendered my system useless.  Turns out my Norton 360 virus scan settings had been set to off.  I've no idea how.  And has left me feeling less confident in Norton....I guess I'll have to constantly check my settings but not convinced that'll help if they can be changed without my knowing.

Welcome,

I'm sorry you are having this problem. It is possible that something you didn't want was attached/hidden in something you did download. Have you done a full scan of your system to be sure that it is clean? I'd also suggest that you download, install, update and run a full scan from the desktop of Malwarebytes free scanner found here:  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

it is Norton compatible and makes a good second opinion scan when you feel the need.

We'll keep a light on.

Stay well and surf safe

The most important security software you have available is between the right and left ears of the current operator :smileywink:

As I sometimes tell others it helps to have the chair/keyboard fully engaged when connected to the Internet.
