I have a similar problem to you!

 

I've noticed Norton 360 v 2 only seems to detect Tracking Cookies when it does a  Background Quick Scan

 

But when Norton 360 v 2 does a Background Full Scan.... It never seems to find any Tracking Cookies :smileysurprised:

 

As most computers tend to pick up Tracking Cookies almost daily...

This makes me wonder - What's Going On!

Is Norton 360 v 2 protecting my computer properly?

 

Also...

I can't figure out these Background Scans :smileysad:

 

One day Norton 360 v 2 will for example....

Perform a.... Quick Scan in the morning - And Full Scan at night.

Another Day.... A Full Scan in the morning - A Quick Scan at night.

Another Day.... Just a Quick Scan.

Another Day.... Just a Full Scan.

Another Day.... A Full Scan in the morning - Another Full Scan at night.

Another Day.... A Quick Scan in the morning - Another Quick Scan at night.

Then for a couple of days.... No Scan At All :smileysad:

 

There doesn't seem to be any kind of rime or reason,  pattern, or continuity to these Background Scans.

Hello Zana,

 

It sounds odd that tracking cookies are handled differently in the two scenarios you mentioned (quick scan vs. full scan). Can you confirm the settings found in your Virus & Spyware Protection Settings? Here's how - In Norton 360,

 

  • Click Settings
  • Click Virus& Spyware Protection
  • Confirm that "Automatically Remove" is selected in the lower section (concerning how the program deals wiht low-risk security items)
  • Then click the Threat Categories tab and confirm that "Scan for Tracking Cookies" is enabled

On the question of the seemlingly random scan times, here's a blog post that has a ton of good information on the Norton 360 idle time scanner and how it works.

 

Please post back if you have any other questions.

I printed your instructions .... And then followed them!

 

Everything was as it should be.

 

Then I visited some websites that I knew would leave Tracking Cookies.

 

As I did not wish to back up at this time...  I  decided to run a Custom Scan.

 

Including...

 

Virus and Spyware Scan

Network Address Check

Browser Check

Temporary Files

Windows Files

History

Disk Optimization

 

But this is where I'm even more confused now

 

The scan seemed to stop as soon as it found a Cookie

The scan lasted only 42 seconds.

 

Now I really am confused as to whether a Custom Scan is supposed to run a Quick Scan or a Full Scan

 

The only thing I can think of that could have possibly caused the Custom Scan to stop....

Just as the Virus and Spyware Scan had got started - I lost my Wireless Internet connection.

But why would that cause the scan to stop?

 

I have installed Norton 360 v 2 three times now ..... Because of problems!

 

Installation Number : 1 .... When I tried to run a Custom Scan - It did the same as today.... Took just a few seconds.

Then after a week I had a Graphics Card Driver Update from HP.

The computer went Belly Up

Approx 4 System Restores later.... Norton 360 v 2 was Belly Up!

Then when I looked in Vista's Problem Reports and Solutions - Norton 360 v 2 hadn't been working right, all that first week.

There was a big long list of - Symantec Service Stopped Working.

 

Installation Number : 2 .... When I ran a Custom Scan - It was definitely a Full Scan.

But within a few hours - Norton Home Froze, turned white, and Windows informed me - Symantec Service Stopped Working

 

Installation Number : 3 .... Although Norton 360 v 2 hasn't gone completely belly Up again yet.

I have noticed that almost every time I switch my computer OFF .... When I turn it back on and look in....

 Problem Reports and Solutions : Symantec Service Stopped Working : Report Sent

The Time of these error messages - - The exact time of computer being Shutdown.

I've just done another Custom Scan

 

First of all -  I once again visited some websites that I knew were guaranteed to leave Tracking Cookies.

  

I only ran the Virus and Spyware part of a Custom Scan this time.

As I didn't think it was such a good Idea to run all the other stuff again so soon.

 

This Time... The Custom Scan ran as I presume it is supposed to run - Full Scan

 

The scan caught some Cookies .... Fixed some Cookies ..... But this time..... Carried on to finish a Full Scan

 

The only thing different.....

 This Time - I didn't lose my Internet Connection!

 

 

Now I just need to see if a Background Full Scan catches Tracking Cookies.

But can you tell me what this little Norton icon is for? 

 

Tiny Norton Icon

 

This tiny Norton icon always seems to pop up in the very top left corner of my Desktop Screen before a Background Scan.

 

It's as though it's Norton's way of saying.... " Get Off The Computer - I'm Waiting To Scan "

 

It is a bit of a pain though!

Sometimes I can be busy browsing the web when it pops up.

But knowing it wont go away until I  leave the computer - I end up giving in... And leaving the computer! :smileysad:

 

It wouldn't be so bad if the background scan started as soon as I had left the computer

But I then have to wait a further 15 to 20 minutes for the background scan to start.

When the background scan does eventually start....

It's not so bad if it's a Quick scan.

But when its a Full Background Scan .... I then have to wait a further 30 minutes.

 

I know I could simply move the mouse and - Stop The Scan!

But What's The Point!

After already waiting 15 to 20 minutes for it to start in the first place :smileymad:

 

I have thought about getting that gadget that was in the link you gave me.

But I don't know if I should, until I'm sure Norton 360 v 2 is working properly.

Does the Gadget work with Vista?

Who actually made the Gadget?

Do you think there is any chance Symantec will simply give / update us with that gadget?

Something else I would like to ask you about while I'm here....

 

Sunday night I was helping my son with his music homework.

On this Website : http://www.eminem.net/

If you scroll down a little you should see a picture of Eminem's Head.

I right clicked the head and clicked ... Save Picture As

Then I thought....

I should try out Norton's 360 v 2 Right Click & Scan.

I went to my pictures folder and scanned the picture.

Norton reported - No Risks Found!

But the second the scan of the Eminem picture was finished....

That little icon Popped Up for second.... And Norton started a Full Scan :smileysurprised:

I thought  this was a bit strange!

 

Note : That was before I followed your instructions and did those Custom Scans

 

 

 

 

One other question....

 

Does a Full Background Scan trigger a System Restore Point to be made?

Thanks for the vibrant responses!

 

The icon appears to be an "undocumented" toaster alert as a scan status, as you noted. I've had it appear as well and it will usually disappear if I right-click or double-click it - my recommendation is to ignore it at this point. The gadget will definitely work with Vista and you can use it to launch scans in situations where you know you're going to be walking away from the computer, so you're not caught in between the idle time scanner and your normal usage.

 

On the scanning from eninmem.net, I couldn't reproduce the behavior you mentioned, although I got confused when you said:

 

" Norton reported - No Risks Found! But the second the scan of the Eminem picture was finished...." What second scan? I downloaded and right-click scan and came back with the same "no risks found", but it didn't trigger any subsequent scan. Can you elaborate on that a little more?

 

Finally, on the question of restore points, N360 only sets a restore point during the registry cleanup scan, which is only initiated during a manual scan. If the full background scan is initiated manually, then a restore point could be made. You can also change the default for the auto scan to include Registry Cleanup, at which point a restore point would be set as part of that scan.

To All,

 

Well - after reading three pages of suggestions, trials and more suggestions - I have removed ALL the Tracking Cookies.

 

CCleaner is the Master - It fixed several registry problems, left from Beta testing of several programs, uninstall leftovers from old programs - not used. I use NIS 2008 and run full scans once a week and quick scans only when I have been surfing for awhile.

 

Since I started this usage I have not received ANY T.C.s on any PC in my Home Network.

I just thought it was a little strange that a full Background scan started ... Straight after the scan of a single picture.

 

 

Re : Full Scans - Registry Clean Up - Restore Points

 

The reason I asked -  " Does a Full Background Scan trigger a System Restore Point to be made? "

 

When  for instance...

I have a Windows Update and an automatic Restore Point is made.

Or

When I manually make a Restore Point myself.

 

For about 15 minutes after the actual Restore Point has been made.....

There is a noticeable pattern to the flashing of my hard drive light on the front of my computer.

Basically - What I'm saying is....

I can tell by the flashing of my hard drive light ( On front of computer ) when a Restore Point is being made.

 

And on quite a few occasions...

I have noticed a Restore Point  being made - during or right after a Full Background Scan :smileysurprised:

 

On one occasion.... I decided to checked the date and time of my last Restore Point.

By the time and date - It had to have been made either during or just after a Full Background Scan.

 

 

Re : Registry Clean Up 

 

I haven't set Norton 360 v 2 to clean the registry

I never do an Intensive Scan ( sorry! I cant remember what the Big Full Scan is referred to ) ...

Because I never like to Back Up at the same time as a Virus Scan.

I always use Custom Scan ... Because I can pick and choose what I want.

I've never used the Registry Clean Up

And it was unticked as default for a Custom Scan.

But how can I check that a Background Full Scan isn't including Registry Clean Up?

Where will I find those Settings?

 

One other thing!

I have 2 CPU Sidebar Gadgets.

One Preinstalled by Vista

The other I downloaded myself - For my Core 2 Quad CPU

When Norton 360 v 2 does a Full Background Scan ....

I have noticed....  Approx three quarters of the way through - My Core 2 Quad CPU hits 100% in all 4 cores

This only lasts a couple of seconds ... But it really scares me :smileysurprised:

Both CPU Sidebar Gadgets hit 100%

The rest of the scan... It just bobs up and down like you would expect.

 

 

One Other Thing!

 

My problem with...

Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working

 

Showing up in Vista's Problem Reports and Solutions - History ............. Has returned!

 

After not happening for a couple of days - It's Back!

It only happens as I shut the computer down.

I don't actually know it's happened.... Until the next time I switch my computer on.

I'm not alerted to this problem by Windows or Norton - Because the Computer is almost Off when it happens.

But it still worries me a bit!

It's as though Norton doesn't know how to shutdown properly with the computer.

I also have the same problem. It seems that real-time protection won’t detect and remove these low risks automatically.
