Sd card scan time

Hi
Just wondering if anyone has longer scan time if sd card selected, after upgrading from ICS to JB? Especially those with galaxy s2. Without sd card 20seconds,with sd card 2mins and 47 seconds. Preparing to scan itself takes time if sd selected. Im sure with ICS didnt take that much time. Well just wanted to know if this is ok and normal.
Running on Galaxy S2 with JB 4.1.2 with NMS V3.3.4.972. After upgrade to JB did a factory reset. (NMS REinstalled)
Thanks!

Hi vthinagar

If you have a lot of folders and files on your Micro SD card with the Scan SD option

enabled the scan time you have mentioned would seem to be ok.

I only have a small number of files and folders on my Micro SD card in my test SGS2

running JB and the scan time with SD card enabled takes about 50 seconds.

Scan SD card disabled and the scan time is about 20 seconds as well with about 60 or

so apps installed.

I hope that info is helpful. :)

Cheers. :smileywink:

Hi smithy
Thanks for your reply. Why im a little concern is because after upgrade to JB the scan time with SD has increased with all other condition same. Since you have a S2, i hope we could compare. I have 27 applications under manage application/download.
Under storage
1) Device memory : 375mb applications / 1.53Gb free.
2) Usb storage : total space 11.5Gb/ available 10.86Gb.
3) Under sd card : Total space 14.9Gb/available 13.47Gb.

I would like to know regarding this application called SCloud Starter under download, i didnt download this at all and i cant uninstall it, NMS says its safe. Just wondering if you have this too
Thank you!

Hi vthinagar

Yes i too also have the app SCloudStarter as well that was part of the Samsung

upgrade i guess from ICS to JB.

S Cloud is i believe Samsung's version of Drop Box or iCloud for Apple devices,

I remember hearing about it a while back but have not heard anything lately.

If found this info -

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57417590-93/samsung-readying-icloud-competitor-for-may-3/

Strange as it should show in the settings but it does not as it is only in the Application

Manager list of Downloaded apps as you have discovered.

I would not worry about it as it is a genuine Samsung app and should not cause any

trouble and only takes up about 208KB of the storage memory.

Also this is what i see on my SGS2 in the Storage part of the settings -

1) Device Memory

Total Space - 1.97GB

Applications - 663MB

Available - 1.21GB

2) USB Storage

Total Space - 11.5GB

Applications - 63.53MB

Pictures, Videos - 37.84MB

Audio - 160KB

Downloads - 14.03MB

Miscellaneous Files - 0.98GB

Available - 10.37GB

3) SD Card

Total Space - 1.84GB

Available - 1.82GB

And under DOWNLOADED in Application Manager i have 56 apps.

Back to the scans can you connect your current Micro SD card to a PC and copy all

the files to a spare or new Micro SD card to test if the scan speeds are the same with

a different Micro SD card.

The Micro SD card might be on the way out ( faulty ). ?

Although NMS is scanning 1GB of data on your SD card which is a fair bit of information.

Keep us posted. :)

Cheers. :smileywink:

Hi Smity,

Thanks for your reply. When we talk about micro SD card, are we referring to external SD? Because I think NMS don't scan this card at all. So today I formatted my micro SD card, then check the scan time, it was still same. So I then unmounted the micro SD card and I found that in NMS the selection for SD card still exist and the scan time was still the same. I gather that NMS is talking about the USB storage card in the phone itself.

After going through all the files there, I came across some left over cached files from Dolphin Browser, though I had suspected this application earlier and uninstalled it but it was still showing  a large left-over cached files. I then deleted this file. Reboot the phone and guess what my scan time with the SD card selected is just 50seconds.....:smileywink:

I knew something was wrong when it was taking so long to scan.

I havent installed the browser and tried again.  Maybe later. Anyway i guess the problem is solved.

Thanks!

Hi vthinagar

That is great news that you have resolved the scan times. :)

That is interesting as i never have Scan SD enabled with NMS on my Android device.

But looking at it a bit more it would appear that adding extra files to the external SD being

the Micro SD card makes no difference to the NMS scan time.

And un-mounting the Micro SD card also makes no difference as you noted in your post.

Very strange it seems like NMS does not scan the Micro SD card part of the storage on

the SGS2.

What makes it very confusing with the SGS2 is there are multiple SD cards in the files

and folders.

An example being extSdCard which appears to be the Micro SD using one file explorer

app and using the same explorer app there is also the sdcard folder which appears to be

the internal phone memory as a whole for the SGS2 including the internal USB storage

which is 11.50GB.

Then to make things even more confusing there is an exteranl_sd folder which is empty

on my SGS2.

So it would appear from testing that the SD Card that is scanned during a NMS Anti-Malware

scan is just the internal memory of the SGS2 and not the external Micro SD card which is fitted

to the SGS2 as you noted in your post.

I will try to check on this to confirm whether this is the case or not.

Thanks for keeping us posted. :)

Cheers. :smileywink:

PS - A good browser for Android devices is the Boat Browser. :)

Hi Smithy,
Ya its quite confusing with samsung. I have a toshiba tablet with JB and it quite easy, cause its named internal and external memory. Anyway to let you know, i have re-installed Dolphin and all seems
ok. Also if NMS is actually scanning the internal
memory of the phone (usb strorage)instead of external sd card when sd is selected then i think the wordings need to be change as its confusing. Well, its my thought.

Thanks!

*Well it's just my thought.....

Hi all,

i have forwarded this issue to the development team for further investigation.

Cool thank you Jon for looking into this with the Norton Team. :smileyhappy:

Cheers. :smileywink:

Hi smithy,
With the recent update to NMS, the scan graphics, the scan itself and the names of files being scan, its simply awesome. Also the message after the scan, of how many files being scan and the time. Its very nice. Though im not sure what sd card being scan, whether external or just the internal memory of phone. But i do sometimes see some files from the external memory been running through scan. Im not sure, if it actualy scans the external memory or it scans due to an application link from the phone memory.

Anyway NMS ROCKS!:smileyhappy:

Ps: it takes 46 seconds to scan for around 3871 files with sd card selected.

Hi vthinagar  :)

That is great news that you are so happy with the newly updated

Norton Mobile Security Android app.:smileyhappy:

And i am sure that the Norton Team is very happy with your great

positive feedback from your post in this thread. :smileyhappy:

Cheers. :smileywink:
