My problem is that I've been trying for 2 days to get on facebook to no avail.And when I tried to download latest Norton update a security alert popped up that said my current security settings won't allow that file to be downloaded.Somehow when I went into my internet options & messed with all that over there trying to get facebook to load,I messed everything up over there & now don't know what I should do.Obviously I'm computer illiterate still & don't wanna make things any worse than they already are.Any suggestions would be awesome!!Thanks!!

Let's see what we can do. First off, there is a reset button in Internet Explorer that will put all your settings back to their default positions. The bad news is you'll lose all your customizations--and perhaps even your bookmarks--but it sounds as though you're not going to be concerned about that (you could export your bookmarks before pressing it, of course)!
After that, if you're still having difficulties, I can give you step-by-step directions for removing and reinstalling your Norton, which remedies a world of hurts sometimes.
Hopefully, though, that will not be necessary. Try the Internet Explorer route, and keep us posted. We're here to help, until you're ready to hit that "Accept as Solution" button!

Before doing a complete IE reset, first open the Security tab in Internet Options and click the "Reset all zones to default level" button. Then open the Advanced tab and click the "Restore advanced settings" button. Click "Apply" and "OK." Close and restart IE. This might correct the issue without losing some of the other things that the reset disables.
Neither of those things worked.Kinda scared to uninstall & reinstall but will try anything at this point.How do I do that?
This is actually pretty painless, but your problem does not sound as much like that would clear it up (although it's possible that it would, in combination with the IE reset you just did). There are a couple of other things we should check out first, though.
To begin with, do you have any other real-time security scanners besides Norton installed (e.g., SpyBot Search & Destroy)? This type of security program does not play well with others, as the real-time scanners tend to see one another's activities as intrusion attempts!
Second, before you do uninstall your Norton protection--even temporarily--you should download and run the free version of malwarebytes (it doesn't do real-time scanning, like its paid version cousin does), as a crosscheck against your Norton.
Once you have removed any other security software--using that vendor's specialized removal tool--and received a clean bill of health from malwarebytes, here are the step-by-step directions for a smooth remove-and-reinstall:
You will not have to pay for the program again, and your subscription days will automatically be recognized when you reinstall this way. Here are the step-by-step instructions:
- Export your Identity Safe cards/credentials to your desktop if you've set these up, so you'll be able to import them back in when your clean install is complete.
- Make sure that you have set up (and can still access) your Norton Account, and that your current Norton 360 subscription is showing under the "Products" tab, with a big yellow "Download" button at right; this is how you will reinstall your Norton product and have it linked automatically to your subscription.
- From Windows Control Panel, use the Add/Remove Programs function to uninstall your Norton 360. This will disconnect all your critical system drivers from your security product so they aren't deleted by the next step. reboot your computer when this is complete.
- Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure a complete uninstall of your existing Norton product. This is necessary because of the extent to which a security package needs to have its tendrils deeply intertwined throughout the Operating System to do its job, and will clean up debris Windows leaves behind that may interfere with proper operation of your Norton product.
- Once the Norton Removal Tool has finished, reboot your computer again, and immediately log back into your Norton Account and click that big yellow Download button. Remember, until you do this, you are temporarily without your Norton protection.
This last step will reinstall Norton 360 and link it automatically to your existing subscription. You should now be back in business, protected by "the speed and power of Norton!"

What Norton update were you trying to download and from what site?
AFTERTHOUGHT: if you haven't done so already, before you try a remove-and-reinstall, close all your browser windows and reboot your computer. If you have not tried this, it is possible that your old settings are being preserved by an open browser window (like the one in which you're visiting this forum!). If so, your problem may disappear as soon as you reboot and start a new browser session from a blank slate.
Okay,I uninstalled & reinstalled Norton & downloaded all updates & restarted my computer but still can't get on facebook.Don't know what else to do & afraid to mess with any settings now!!This is so frustrating & it's starting to **** me off really bad!!Any help would be appreciated!!Thanks!!
There was a Facebook issue here last week, where some fraudulent sites linked through Facebook erroneously caused not only those pages but all of Facebook to be included in a blacklist sent out with a LiveUpdate. This was corrected within hours, and propagated worlwide overnight.
Are you certain that you have received all updates? Some are dependent on previous updates having already been installed (sometimes requiring a reboot), so you may have to run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you receive a message at the end that explicitly says you have received the latest updates.
There was also, as I recall, a quirk in prior versions of Windows (pre-7), that required you to let your system go idle before the patch correcting this issue actually took effect. For Windows 7 systems it took effect immediately upon being installed.
If you've tried both of these to no avail, a reboot never hurts.
I'll be back in a minute with a link to the closing part of the thread from this incident, to offer some guidance if there are any remaining outliers there for whom all of the above have failed to resolve the problem.
[Edit: OK, I see you've been there already this morning. Let us know if none of what I've posted above remedies the problem (I strongly suspect, since you had to start from a reinstall--which brought you a build from before last week's problem--that you just need to run LiveUpdate a few more times, to work your way through to the patch that fixes this, and/or reboot) and if you're still stuck with this issue, I'll page Symantec's Dave_Coleman, who was working its final cleanup, to this thread.]
I've installed all live updates & restarted computer & it's saying they're all installed.Tried to go on facebook again to no avail.
OK, I'l see if I can get Dave_Coleman here to take a look at this. As far as I can tell from the lack of any new user activity on this thread, this should be fixed worldwide. Sorry it's still causing you trouble....
What happens when you try to access Facebook? Are you gettting a "page not found" message?
No.When I type in my e-mail address & password & hit enter it just goes back to that same spot.I went on Norton's live chat & gave him control of computer & he tried several things but he could only access it without add-ons.I still can't get on facebook & he said that he doesn't think it's because of Norton.He thinks it's a problem with Microsoft.I believe that it's Norton & here's why.I have 2 computers in my apartment & they are hooked up together & on same network.I have Norton 360 on this computer & can't access facebook.My boyfriend doesn't have Norton on the other computer & I can get on facebook with his.I don't know what else to do.I only have 5 weeks left before my 1 year of service is up & was thinking about just uninstalling it now but haven't decided yet.
Do you get a failed login error message when the page resets?
No,it just goes back to where you log in again.It's funny when I just tried to go on there I accidentally put in wrong password & it said invalid password & when I typed in the right password it went back to spot where it says e-mail,password & login.

You said you can log into FB w/bf's computer: do that, run the Norton Safe Web app on your FB page; what does it report?
What did malwarebytes report?
When you uninstalled N360, were you able to access FB?
Did you clear IE cache, cookies? Do you have cookies enabled?
Click Start|Run... enter the following (copy/paste):
notepad "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"
Copy/paste the text shown in notepad in a post here.
I have checked around online and it looks like this problem is often caused by a cookie issue. As RoloX2 just suggested, try clearing your browser history and delete all Facebook cookies. Make sure your browser is set to accept cookies (cookie preferences are found in the Privacy tab).. Restart IE and try logging in to FB again.
Oh, I forgot to mention:
Try installing Firefox and logging into FB with it. IE really is painful.
