Security Center in Vista reporting reports that Firewall/Malware Protection is off (NIS 2009)

Hi,

Today when I started my machine (Vista Ultimate 32bit) , I got a notification from Windows Security Center.

In the details of FireWall it says:

Windows FireWall is turned off
Two or more firewalls running at the same time can conflict with each other.

In 'Malware Protection', it says:

Norton Internet Security is on but its status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported. Use the program's automatic updating feature, or contact the program manufacturer for an updated version.

Yesterday everything was fine, but now after starting up the machine it reports this problem.

I didn't install any other application in the meantime and all norton applications are running as normal.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Nick

Have you recieved any MS updates today?  Just checking what may have changed.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I tried several Live Updates + restarts but it says that my system is up to date, no new updates.

I checked Windows Update and the only one I see is from yesterday 13/07/09 'Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)' with status successful.

So maybe that could be the cause, I was hoping that other people would report this but I can't find much info on it.

Nick

Can you try to uninstall that particular Security update from your computer and check whether the issue persists?

You can always get the same update from Microsoft Web site.

Can't be uninstalled :smileysad:

Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I've joined because I too am getting the same error message from Windows Security Alert - no firewall, and no malware protection detected. I've also got the message that Norton is using a "format that is no longer supported".

I am running Windows Vista, with Norton 2008.

This message is new to me today, on the 14th July. I have had no updates from Microsoft since the 22nd June and have been using my computer almost daily since then, so I would assume that it has not been caused by Windows Update, but I may be wrong.

Norton itself seems fine - all green messages.

I just checked my wife's laptop (also Vista with NIS2009) and it's also occuring there, yesterday no problems.

So it indeed seems to be a problem with NIS itself.

I've had the exact same problem with my Vista Home Laptop with NIS 2008 on it

Yesterday everything was fine, used live chat to no avail.

Im pleased its a problem thats not just at my end

Any clues on what has happened and how its to be fixed?

Hi mapp08,

Welcome to Norton Community!

Which Norton 2008 program do you use- Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security?

If you have an active subscription for your Norton 2008 program, you can get the latest version- Norton 2009 which is more efficient and powerfull.  Go to your Norton Account using this LINK and get the Product Key. You may require this same Product Key for activating the Norton 2009 program. You can use the Upgrade Center for installing Norton 2009 upgrade. When you install Norton 2009, the Norton installer will automatically detect and remove the previous versions if it is present. When you install the update, it will remove your previous Norton 2008 and apply the subscription information to Norton 2009 program. You can continue using the new version by just renewing the subscription when the current subscription expires. After installing the 2009 program, run a LiveUpdate and then a full system scan. Check whether Windows Security center detects this new upgrade.

You can also ignore the alert from Windows Security Center as you can always check the status of the Norton program from the system tray icon. As long as the Norton icon shows GREEN tick(Secure), you don't have to worry about the protection of your computer.

My XP PC with NIS 2009 is working fine, just the Vista NIS 2008 Laptop thats gone wrong

Hi,

I followed yogesh_mohan's instructions on updating my Norton software to 2009. Currently it seems to have removed the Windows Security message, and a check in Security Centre seems to indicate that Norton is being fully recognised.

So for me, at the moment, it seems as if the problem is solved.

I've been having the same problem.  I have Vista, and I have Symantec Antivirus, 2007 I think.  I downloaded a copy from the University I attend.

Either Windows tells me "Symantec Antivirus has stopped working," and then it says that it will run the program again when it is able to.

Tonight was the first time that I got the notice from the Security Center that the Malware protection was turned off.  I  tried to turn it on with the links provided, but those didn't work.

In each case, rebooting for me solved the problem.  In the former case, I didn't get the notification from Windows saying Symantec wasn't working.  In the latter case, Security Center said Malware was turned on.

However, in both instances, I can still access Symantec AntiVirus, run scans, and run LiveUpdate- and AutoProtect is enabled.  For all intents and purposes, it's working.

I've never had this problem before, and no Microsoft Updates were installed since this problem started, so I'd like to know what the root of the problem is.

I'd really like to not uninstall Symantec, especially because I don't know/think I'll be able to download another copy since I downloaded my University copy already.

Any help would be great!

Hi raspberidelight,

Can you go to Add/Remove Programs(Uninstall a Program) and check whether it shows Norton AntiVirus or Symantec AntiVirus?

If you are using Symantec AntiVirus (Corporate edition), you may have to post the same in Symantec Enterprise forum (http://forums.symantec.com) for getting more information on problems related to Enterprise product- Symantec AntiVirus. This forum is for Symantec Consumer Products.

Do Engineers from Symantec read this too?

Where can I file a bug? As it does seem that a few people have problems with it since yesterday and it's not something I alone am having problems with.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Nick,

There are many Symantec employees who review the problems reported in this Norton Community and provide solution accordingly. As it is happening only since yesterday, I would suggest you to try the common troubleshooting step for this issue (AntiVirus program is not detected by Security Center)- rebuild WMI Repository as this happens if the Windows Management Instrumentation Repository file is damaged(not sure whether this will work, but you can have a try while waiting for a response from Symantec).

 1. Click the Start button and then click All Programs > Accessories Run.
2. Type the following and click OK.
services.msc
3. The Services window appears. In the right pane, right-click  Windows Management Instrumentation service, and select Stop.

4. Close the Services window.

5. Navigate to the following folder from Computer:

C:\Windows\System32\wbem

6. Delete the "repository" folder.

7. Click the Start button and then click All Programs > Accessories Run.
8. Type the following and click OK.
services.msc
9. The Services window appears. In the right pane, right-click  Windows Management Instrumentation service, and select Start.

10. Restart the computer.

After restarting the computer, run LiveUpdate from Norton program repeatedly and let us know what happens.

I too am having this problem.  Vista  Ultimate 64bit apparently had updates installed last nite because it was sitting at the login screen.  It listed about 5-6 updates that it installed.  THen  my Windows Security Center is showing a red X with the following:

FIREWALL : OFF

MALWARE PROTECTION :

Virus Protection : Not Compatible

Norton Internet Security is on but is reporting its status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported.  Use the program's automatic updating feature, or contact the manufacturer for an updated version.

Spyware and other malware protection : OFF

I'm using NIS 07.  My subscription is still good.  In fact my NIS shows that its working just fine....except my windows is showing that everything is gone haywire in this SEcurity Center window.  I have no idea whats going on but it's apparently caused by the update i got last nite.  I hope this is a fluke and my NIS really *is* working.

Hi smm13,

Can you try to update your Norton 2007 program to the latest Norton 2009 program?

You can find the instructions on one of my posts in first page of this thread. Let us know if that worked for you.

Yogesh

I have done what was suggested on page 1 and upgraded from 2008 to 2009 and the problem seems to be fixed at the moment.

Fingers crossed! :smileyhappy:

If the users with problems are running 64bit versions of Vista SP1 or SP2, they will have to upgrade to the 2009 products (correct me if I’m wrong but I thought that the 2007 / 2008 versions of Norton are not fully compatable with 64Bit OS) .
