Security product shutdown?

I need a bit of clarification. I know the Norton producta have tamper protection ( I use NAV2008), but then I also read how malware will shut off security  products. When I go to the threat explorer page on Norton site, many of the virus show that they shut down securitySo it always concerns me that maybe some maleware gets in and shuts off my Norton protection and then I don't even know it and the maleware shows the protection is on but its not.

So that is my concern

For verification, you can always check for the process running with Windows Task Manager.  The 2009 products have this type of protection fortified so that malware can not shut them down.  I have personally verified that with v16.5.0.135 of NIS2009.  You may want to look into upgrading (it’s free for current subscrption holders of the consumer products; check with you OEM if you have an OEM version).

In task manager, would I see it in the services or the processes? And what would it look like for NAV2008?

In Task Manager, look under Processes (be sure to select ‘Show processes from all users’) and look in the Description column for Symantec listings.  In my system (running Vista and NIS) it shows ccSvcHst.exe (which is the framework for Symantec to run in) loaded and active.  Sorry that I don’t have NAV to look at but this should head you in the correct direction.

I have 2 instances showing of CCSVCHST.EXE both descriptions say Symantec Service Frame work

One uses 3,100-3,600 K of memory, the other holds steady at 774k of memory

Same here.  That would be good then.  So, now if the icons and GUI (main Norton interface) don’t open you can still check if it’s running “behind the scenes”.

Only problem is that in the task manager they don't show a user name.

Now when I go to Vista software explorer under currently running programs, it shows two ccSvHst.exe

One has a user name NT Authority/System

The other says Me-PC

wonder why that does not show as such (the user name) in task manager?
