Sorry tries to post this before and nothing took
anyway. I have a wireless router with my cable internet. When set up router was password protected as was connection to the wireless function. Have a desktop pc hard connection and iPhone that uses internet via wireless connection to router
Well the power to my home went out this morning for about ann hour
My concern is sine the power outage caused my router to power off, did that cause all my passwords for the router and wirless connection to reset to the weaker original default settings and passwords?
thought i read somewhere that powering off the router resets evrything to default?
Hi Calls:
A good router should have a bit of SRAM (non-volatile memory) to hold all your settings in case of a power failure.
Once you press the reset button (with power on) it will convert to all the default firmware values. Many routers let
you make a .txt file of your settings which you had created just in case you need to reload them at a later date via
the router setup in your web browser.
Hope this helps you.

mostly I just want to make sure that the router turning off due to a power outage WOULD NOT reset all my router/wireless conectcions TO DEFAULT
Hi Calls:
What Router are you using? (Vendor and Model number) I can look it up!
See if you can make a backup file of your Router settings, per my previous post.
If you can, then unplug the Router for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
Worst case is that the settings can be reloaded.

No, that does not happen. You need to stick something sharp into a little "reset hole" on the router and manually reset everything, to do that. Cutting power will not change anything.

Careful. That's why my response was measured.
Some early/cheap routers would lose their configs when the power cut out. I have seen this myself.
I would rather be cautious.

thanks all
Really dont want to screw with the router, just want to make sure all is as it was before the power went out.
Router was installed about 3 months ago when I got cable internet. so I think router is not that old.
Before I left home. I entered the 192.168…into my browser and the router login page came up. I used the default original user name and password, and was not able to access router settings
Thats a good thing
Makes me think the the router username and password I CREATED, is still in effect
that would appear so right?
as said just wanting that the settings did not change due to power outage turning off router

Hi Calls,
Don't worry, you are in good shape. If anything got lost it would go back to default login. The other simple test is simply to ensure that your wireless laptop can still access the Internet.
I assume you also set up an encrypted password using something like WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] for your wireless connections, correct?
Best wishes.
Allen
Thanks Allen
yes I had set up wireless encryption
But I think I may have muddied up the waters on my concern.
It is exactly my concern that the power going out and my router turning off - would that cause the password and logins to revert to the default? That is what I am hoping DID NOT happen.
Thus my question would router going of due to power outage cause passwords and logins to factory defaults?
Or would router turning off NOT casuse password and logins to revert to factory defaults?
I am confused by the answers on here

HI Calls,
I'm not sure what the confusion is. Atomic_Blast simply said he has seen older routers sometimes lose their configuration following a power outage.
This is NOT the case for you. You have a recent router which is simply not going to have this problem. You have tested it to ensure that the default password is NOT being accepted. Clearly the router did NOT revert to default settings.
You are fine, there is no problem.
Best wishes.
Allen
thanks
The confusion was me : )
I also see that my wireless security status is
WPA-PSK(AES)
is that pretty secure?

Yes it is but WPA 2 as I mentioned earlier is better.

Hi calls
Rest easy ! You should be fine regarding the status of your security settings . Your posts from your Samsung SGH in "Tech Outpost were "blank entries " though ?
I can only confirm what the other guys' have said regarding router status after " Power off " ...Any recent model from all the major roter/modem manufacturers will not loose your settings and configuration status after a "switch off "
The loss of settings are possible if you enter the modem/router settings via the "192.168. x.x" route....where you have to enter the "reset " mode youself .....many makes of router will also ask if you" really wish to proceed ?" at this stage anyway...So you can rest easy in the fact that a Power outage or personal " Switch off " will leave your original settings unaltered
A "Power surge " however can be a different story ...Try and ensure that any sensetive equpment is protected by a good qulity "Surge Protection " device at the power source !
Cheers........Ed

Yes sorry my not so smart phone was messing up when I tried to post that
"I have a wireless router with my cable internet "
Hi Calls,
Did you get that router from your cable provider or did you purchase it?
Also, is it possible to provide the model, manufacturer etc?
As for me, when I received my ADSL router from my ISP, a few years ago, first thing I have done was to trash it and purchase a good one which I have for 5 years and it's on "always on" function.
Regards,
the router came from my cable internet provider. Not home so cant give speifics.
It seems to work well
Hi again,
One more question, if I may, since I'm not familiar with cable internet, I use ADSL internet, is your model a PSTN or ISDN ADSL router-AP or a cable modem-router?
Thank you.
Best wishes,
Hi again Calls,
Sent you also a PM.

Regards,
FYI, any troubleshooting steps taken should be on the public forum here and not via PM.
The issue or question reported had to do with whether the router retained its settings after the power outage and it has been ascertained that it did.
Best wishes.
