Security update from Microsoft

Received an update from Microsoft for IE on 5/1 after this I had a problem with the laptop w 8.1.Was not able to download 2 more updates. It gives me a Database Error 0x80070490. Fixed the  update components but was not able to fix the Database error. Tried to update Norton 360 21.2.0.38 but it will not update or scan my PC. it froze. Now after I get this fixed do you think I'm able to use 360 or should I un install it and using the NRT tool and installing a new copy of 360 ?

Thank you for your time in helping me.

Tried this several times already, and it does not work. When I try to update windows again it just stays there without doing any thing. Talked to a guy from Microsoft today and the have a fix now, but this is not good for me. Found a link on the Microsoft website ...wiki errors..... if you like I can post the website. My main concern is to get my Norton to work, and I don't think it will unless I fix the Database error.

Thank you for the fast response.

Fix your system first. Then we can look at trying to provide useful information for others

When you restarted your Windows, did you do a complete shut down or are you using the fast start feature of Win 8 that is really only a hybrid sleep/hybernate?

Try this MS KB article

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044

When I went to that page it popped up a link to a Microsoft FixIt tool that it says can fix most Windows Update errors so I'd try that.

Do not post or use the wiki page you refer to -- it has nothing to do with the real wiki sites and it comes up in first place when you google because it's an advertisement.....

My link comes from the genuine Microsoft reference Error code 0x80070490 when you use Windows Update next down the list.

When you google watch for "above a line" and " below a line" ....

First of all I like to thank every body for your help....Peterweb and huwyngr...

Every thing is sorted out now had a sleepless night because of it.

What I did to is this. And no I did not click on or download from the "wiki".

I reset my IE11 and I tried to reboot but it would not shut down so I removed the Battery and waited for 10 min. Put my Battery back in and restarted my laptop. took a little while to reboot but it finally did. To my surprise all of my apps in the metro where back (the where gone also). First thing I did opened up Norton (it worked again) did a scan and an update and every thing was back to normal.

Since I worry about every thing I decided I take my laptop to the Microsoft store what is close by. Does guys where very helpful and checked every thing out for me (free) also updated my update from Microsoft. Every thing is working again perfect, I'm a very happy person now

When all of this happened I went to the Microsoft website, but it said sorry the Fix it tool is not for your windows or something like this. Going to check on the link what you provided later. Thank's

Wouldn't know what to do without you guys always willing to help.

This is a reply to Peterweb. I went and shut Windows 8.1 down under settings and power.

Every thing is working fine now. Please read my reply to huwyngr.

Thank you for your help.

This is on of the best boards I have been.

Nanaha,

Thanks for the update -- I'm glad the "cold start" for the laptop fixed it for you.

Good to know that people in the Microsoft Stores can be helpful -- difficult to get personal help from Microsoft on line !

Glad you have things working again.

What you achieve with the 'settings and power' is actually the hybrid shut down that I mentioned above, that does not actually fully shut down the computer. When you pulled the battery, (assuming you had unplugged the power cord) would have caused a full shut down.

A rather long, but detailed explanation of the Win 8 shutdown and instructions on how to achieve a complete shutdown can be found here  http://www.howtohaven.com/system/how-to-shutdown-windows-8.shtml
