Sent emails not being recieved. Malware?

Lately, none of my sent emails are being received. Does anyone know of any possible reason/solution?  Norton scan does not indicate any threats.

Thanks, JJ.  I log in directly to GVTC webmail and that is where I send and receive emails.  That's why I have always suspected the issue resides with their server, or at least the interface between my computer and their server.  But numerous techs at GVTC cannot identify a problem at their end and point to my computer.  I have installed outlook and gmail as well as backups and have no problem sending and receiving with those programs.  Since things are working again now, if I encounter the issue again, I will pay to have one of their ETechs take control of my computer and investigate because I exhausted every option I could think of even though they were mostly shots in the dark..

Zoombag,

I can send emails from the same computer using my gmail or outlook accounts, but cannot send an email from my "webmail"

I receive all emails just fine, but cannot send anything from my "webmail" account

I believe there is still some confusion as to how you check/send your email with GVTC when you encounter this problem.  If its Web Based, i.e., you login at GVTC web site through your Browser and see your email in their web page or if you're using an email program installed on your PC that has been configured to connect directly to their server.

GVTC does provide configuration instructions on how to setup an installed email client to work with their service at this link.  However, I did not see whether or not they provide their customers a Web Based Email service. You'd have to have an account and login to see.

If GVTC does have Web Based Email and you login through their web page to see and send your email, then I would suspect the problem is on their side.  If you use a program installed on your PC to check your email with them, it could be something on your end causing the issue.

Could you please clarify?

Last night before I went to bed, I restarted my computer and this morning, it appears the outgoing emails are being received again as I received test messages I sent to myself.  This is most baffling as I had restarted and did hard shutdowns several times previously.  Although this, once again resolves the issue, I fear it is only temporary (again).  Any ideas as to why this might be occurring will still be welcome.  Thanks.

So, all of a sudden I am experiencing the same problem as last month - outgoing emails are not being received.  I did another update of Windows 10 and that did not solve the problem this time.  My email provider, again, says it does not reside with their server.  I have run diagnostics and Malwarebytes to no avail.  Is it possible Norton is running a spam filter of some sort that blocks my emails from going out?  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I'm glad it is resolved, at least for now.

Thanks huwyngr.  I'll keep your suggestions for future reference should I run into a similar problem.  For now, the problem seems to have been resolved with the Windows 10 update.  It's frustrating trying to find a cause and solution, but comforting to know there are folks like yourself so willing to offer help.

I running Windows 10 Version 1809, OS Build 17763.1039

From what I've read just now that is an update for Server editions and maybe Pro .... whereas Server editions are usually part of large installations in industry.

Quite how that should be a current update (Feb 11 2020) when I'm on the version shown above as amended I don't know.

If no-one else here can help you you could try Forumania, a Forum set up by staff of the old Compuserve Forum. Look for Tech Support among the list of Forums there but do post all details accumulated from your messages here including full information about your version here especially the missing bit about Home Pro Server etc.

The chief Moderator there can get quite nasty if you don't!

Or you could Google on Windows 10 Support Forums and chose one of the non-Microsoft ones.

I'm still not certain the problem is resolved.  I have been able to receive test messages I sent to myself and at least one other recipient indicated they got a sent email.  But I'm still awaiting a few more responses.

I running Windows 10 Version 1809, OS Build 17763.1039

Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback -- with Windows, who knows? Certainly not Microsoft!

Type WINVER into the Search box at the bottome of the screen and let us know the full version you now have and you should see something like this:

Winver.jpgBe interesting to know -- did ask you before <g>

So, this morning, I got a notice to update Windows 10 and restart, which I did.  I had restarted several times previously, but it didn't solve the problem.  However, after this one, I am able to send emails again that are, apparently, being received.  Maybe Windows discovered there was an issue and fixed it???  Go figure.  Anyway,  thanks for all your help.

I really appreciate your inputs.  I receive all emails just fine, but cannot send anything from my webmail account.  I can send from my outlook and gmail accounts. So a test email from the webmail account never shows up as received in that account although I do get them from my gmail and outlook accounts.  I have a call in to my provider where they will take control of my computer and search the client server configuration.  It will cost me some, but I hope worth eliminating my frustration.

Just to be clear, do you still receive emails from other senders?  I agree with huwyngr that you should verify that your email client is configured with the correct server and credential information to access your email provider's servers.  Does your test email show up in your webmail account online?  Can you send and receive online?  If so, the issue is the email client on your PC.

I'm thinking there is something amiss with the outgoing server, but I don't know how to get to it or what to look for if I did.  I'm planning to call my service provider for a third time, since they did open a case, but am guessing they will still point the finger at my computer.

Actually that is very similar to what I get with my setup descibed earlier.

It is a mismatch between what my email client (Thunderbird) has set for the servers since Spectrum made it's changes to recover old RoadRunner channels used for TV that Spectrum want to reuse for additional Spectrum channels.

Earller  I asked you:

How do you send your emails? Do you do it direct on the web or use a client like Thunderbird?

I have somewhere where to look in Thunderbird to set the information the servers need but your techie should  be able to guide you, at least to check them. He's right that they may be on your computer but it's accessing their system so the settings may be the problem

When I send an email to myself, it just goes in my sent file, but is never received in my inbox.  I can send emails from the same computer using my gmail or outlook accounts, but cannot send an email from my webmail (the one I have been using) to either Gmail or Outlook.  I'm running Windows 10 and Norton 360.   I also ran malwarebytes where a couple of threats were identified and quarantined.   I'm thinking there is something amiss with the outgoing server, but I don't know how to get to it or what to look for if I did.  I'm planning to call my service provider for a third time, since they did open a case, but am guessing they will still point the finger at my computer.  Thanks much for your help.

What happens if you send one to yourself either on the GVTC email address or another if you have one, like gmail for example?

I did some troubleshooting with one of their reps who advised the problem was at my end.

With no suggestions either to what it was not or what it might be.

Anyway hang on for some other suggestions since networks/email system problems are not my strong point.

What version of Windows and which Norton product are you using? Please check its  Version Number (Help / About on the main screen of the classic version of the opening screen)

I'd also try running the free version of Malwarebytes

https://www.malwarebytes.com/

which has a very good record for finding malware quickly. Don't go for the setup of it that runs antivirus at the same time to avoid conflicts with Norton.

When you send a test email to yourself, what happens?

Thanks for that information.  I wish that was the case, but my email provider is a local company, GVTC webmail.  I did some troubleshooting with one of their reps who advised the problem was at my end.  I don't recall changing anything on my computer and this problem just started   I have rebooted, done scans for malware and cannot find any issues.  Very frustrating.

How do you send your emails? Do you do it direct on the web or use a client like Thunderbird?

Have you saked the service you use? If it's Spectrum they are making major changes to their old setup and it has affected email. I see major delays in transit on incoming (I can't tell on outgoing) but I sometimes get asked for my password before one is sent.

Some details please .......
