NIS 2013, updated until no definitions, but still have the "Service framework has stopped functioning" from time to time, I checked Win 7 managment logs and had these;
Name resolution for the name pirs.symantec.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Not sure if related when norton is trying to update itself or similar.
also have these;

Hi frugalfreak
Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support and let it run then restart the computer.

I did that already, any idea what is causing it? I've seen several people ask with the same issue, but I can't find where Norton ever replies as to what is causing it. I read somehere else that MSVCR100.dll may be visual C ++ 2010 file, I uninstalled and reinstalled both x86 and x64 also.
Correction, Windows 7 HP X64
Hi frugalfreak
Can you check for updates manually as there have been reports of problems recently? Restart the computer after each update until the updates report no more updates.
You may have two versions of Norton on the system. The log in your first post says Norton Internet Security 20.3.1.22 while the version on the attachment is 20.4.0.40. can you recheck that the log time is after the update or before.

The version showing still is 20.4.0.40, I have live updated until norton could do no more(completed, not required, not required). gotten the 3 green checkmarks and not required messages when live updated. But the issue is sporadic. I'm not trying to get it working right now since it works fine until it crashes then I restart norton and it appears as fine, I want to know what the cause is so it doesn't crash in future.
The log was from 6/13/13, I have ran live update several times and the fix method also, I was hoping it was just a possible hint at the cause based on event. I have many of those, but cant copy them all, would have to do each one individually and that is a major pain.
Please leave this thread active for some time, and when (if)the framework does crash again, I'll make sure to grab the current event warning log and list it here..
Hi frugalfreak
Can you check whether you have a 64bit or 32bit system. As the log reports X86 which normally means 32bit and X64 means 64bit. You say that you have
visual C ++ 2010 file, I uninstalled and reinstalled both x86 and x64
that doesn’t sound right to me but someone who knows more than me may post about it.
The log was from 6/13/13 what date was the attachment image created on the computer not when it was posted. What I am trying to get at is if the attachment was produced before the log then it looks like you have two different versions of Norton on the system.

I have 64 bit system running Windows 7 X64, I installed both versions of visual C + because that is what I had listed and installed in control panel, I also likely have some legacy programs that are 32 bit that may use it. You can install legacy software using compatibility settings.
when I installed Norton, It installed itself, now whether it installed 64 bit on the disc I am not aware. I also would like to hear from someone with norton expertise to chime in on this discussion and the crash issue.
I don't have two copies of nortons on the system, just one. I did a clean install of win 7 on this new computer not long ago so I know that is the case. You may be getting confused because while in between posting the info, i was currently running fixes and trying different things. the events are merely a HINT to guide what may be the cause, not relying on it being the only event that caused it, there were many. If you could explain how to export a log, I'll show you all of them.

If you are referring to Norton files, Norton installs in Program FIles (X86) even on 64 bit systems .....
Hi frugalfreak
Thanks for responding to my questions. The logs are not required at the moment. As you have done a clean reinstall of windows that means you may have a trial version of a security software that comes free with the windows software, can you check carefully as this is important, in the windows add/remove programmes, the programme files and the programme data if you find security software please follow the instructions below. To help identify what you are looking for use the web with your make and model number.
When did the problem start, if recently due to an update that changed the version to 20.4.0.40 then the problem might be that you have updated to get the latest version of Norton that may be causing a problem there is a link below that describes how to perform a clean reinstall of the new Norton version.
Check Edjr60 post number 11 on the link below.
http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/New-version-20-4-0-40/td-p/974949/page/2
The paragraph below mentions Norton this refers to different product programmes so from NAV to NIS or to 360 if the Norton product was NIS 2012 then installing NIS 2013 by just installing it is ok unless the previous version was causing problems. The below paragraph also concerns old versions of Norton so a few versions earlier of a Norton product.
Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton?
To uninstall any security software use the windows add/remove programme then restart the computer, then run the removal tool for the specific version of the security software that is available from the security software’s main site, then restart the computer. This process should be done for each security software to be uninstalled, meaning one at a time.
If you have run the removal tool for Norton then, reinstall Norton restart the computer, run live updates as many times as it takes to get, no more live updates, restarting as required.
You might like to backup the personal data and you’ll need to backup or export your identity safe and any other users identity safe if it is used, before doing the above.

"when I installed Norton" It was installed as I noted not pre-installware, I fixed it, it seems with support updating and ever since uninstalling and reinstalling the software previously noted (Visual C + (x86 and x64) 2010), it has not reoccured. No offense intersec, but you don't read what is provided and your repeated asking of info and statements that totally miss the mark of what I provided and stated and lack of experience tells me that maybe you need more experience before responding to complex issues,
No one responded thus far as to what the reason may have been, nor any guesses of causes as to what issues were despite others with previous issues, just guessing fixes seems to be provided. what is the point of these forums if I can provide as much info and testing as the people who are supposed to provide help here? the responders need a higher level of expertise on what they are responding about.
Still have not seen an answer of cause and how long has it been since the first person informed you of the bug?
If the help here complicates 10x what it should be and distracts, maybe the help needs retraining.
I still appreciate the time and hope that some day someone will share answers when applicable, not just fixes. We all learn by fixing and knowing WHAT we fixed.
Hi frugalfreak,
Please bear in mind that everyone here with the exception of those with their name in bold red (Symantec employees) are just users like you volunteering their time to try and assist.
Thanks,
Dave
