Settings for IMAP

I recently had to re-install Norton Internet Security 2009. After I reinstalled it, Outlook 2003 goes completely catatonic when it tries to my IMAP account. The only way out is to kill the application.

Outlook still works okay for my POP account, provided that I prevent it from checking for mail in the IMAP account. It also works okay for the IMAP account if I "Disable Smart Firewall". It used to work okay for the IMAP account before I had to re-install.

I tried configuring the Firewall, and I cannot figure out what settings to give it that will enable IMAP access on port 993. (I also have no memory of what I had done to enable IMAP in the past for NIS 2009 and also for earlier versions of NIS.) NIS help does not seem to know the work IMAP.

Can anyone tell me what settings are needed or where I can find this information?

Thanks,

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

Welcome to Norton Community!

You can try to create a general rule in Smart Firewall to open the particular port and then check the connectivity .

1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. In the Internet pane, click Settings.
3. Under Smart Firewall, click Configure next to Advanced Settings.
4. Under Advanced Settings, click Configure next to General Rules.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Add Rule wizard, select Allow, and then click Next.
7. Select Connections to and from other computers, and then click Next.
8. Select Only the computers and sites listed below, and then click Add.

9. Select Individually, enter the IP Address/Name of your IMAP server and then click OK.
10. Click Next.

11. Select Only communications that match all types and ports listed below, and then click Add.

12. Select Individually specified ports, enter the port number which is required to be open(Port number:993) and click OK.

13. Click Next.
14. If you want the logs for this rule to be saved, check Create an event log entry, and then click Next.
15. In the "What do you want to call this rule?" box, type a name for the rule, and then click Next.
16. Click Finish
17. Click Move Up to move the rule to top, and make it a higher priority.

18. Click OK, and again click OK.

19. Click OK.

Let us know the results.

Yogesh,

Thanks very much. It seems to work.

Interestingly, it did not work on the first attempt. Outlook still hung. After I killed it and waited for a while, I tried again. This time it does work.

Thanks again,

Hugh
