Should I backup data first before updating Norton and perform virus scanning?

I would like to know what the general practice is on scheduling following tasks:

 

  1. Update Norton anti-virus and perform scanning
  2. Backup all your data

Does anyone have any suggestions on which one should come first for better maintenance?
