When I went to turn the firewall on, Norton said that it was not recommended to have the firewall on. Does that make sense and do you know why I should disable the firewall?

What Firewall is it that you are referring to? If it is Wondows' Firewall, then please Turn Off this; you cannot have two Firewalls on at the same time as there will be clashes which will weaken your Security.
Do you have any other Security Products installed on your computer? If so, please un-install them.
What Anti-Virus Product did you have installed on your computer before Norton and how did you un-install them?
Also, what Windows O.S. have you got installed and with which Service Pack?
Thanks!!

Yeah it was the Windows firewall. I have Windows XP. I turned off the Windows firewall. I guess I didn't realize Norton has it's own firewall.
Thanks guys.
I assume you have NIS2009 and therefore have a firewall.
If you have NAV2009 - you need to leave Windows firewall on or add another firewall of your choice.
Ken
Yeah I have NIS. I am not sure if it is 2008 or 2009 though.
I just got the upgrade so I don’t know if it’s 2008 or 2009. Do they both have firewalls?

Both are security suites including firewalls. I would recommend you using v2009. It is much safer and faster. And indeed it is not advisable to use another firewall next to this one
Thanks for your help!
