Should I Temporarily Turn Off Protection?

When not Connected, then it is fine to Turn Off everything, although I would leave Auto-Protect on; when Connected, Turn On everything.  You can Turn Off/On Products of N.I.S. via the N.I.S. Options which can be found in the N.I.S. tab under the sub-heading, Settings.

With regard to Automatic LiveUpdate: Feel free to Turn this Off - just as long as you run LiveUpdate every-few-hours manually.

In the context of the enquiry -- someone who is literally off-line for long periods " It will only rarely be open to the internet." -- there is little point in suggesting checking for updates manually every few hours since that involves going on-line to do it at a time when he would not otherwise be on-line.

What would be important would be to force, if necessary, LiveUpdate to check prior to going on line for another purpose that might expose the user to an attack.

I can enviseage the kind of useage since it is how I use my laptop when traveling -- 99% for storing photographs from my camera and 1% checking email or occasionally dipping into a forum or weather channel.
