When I go to MSCONFIG and click the Start up tab, I see lots of Microsoft items and then even some adobe items.
But I do not see anything from Symantec/Norton.
I have my NIS set up for early load. When I look at Norton Security history, under the Firewall activities, it appears that NIS is one of the first things detected.
So shouldn't it show up in the list of start up items? It concerns me that it is not showing as a start up item
It does not and it should not. NIS runs as a service. Go to Start menu, and in the search box at the bottom of it, type services.msc and hit Enter. Scroll down until you find Norton Internet Security. It should have a Startup Type named Automatic, which means that it starts as the system starts.
You can also click the Service tab in msconfig. Select "Hide all Microsoft services" and you should spot the Norton service.
At work I cannot access the Norton Forums. So I posted the question elsewhere, and as expected received rather strange and confusing responses. On the Microsoft answers forum, I was even told (not by a microsoft staff) that NIS should not show under services or start up items, that it was a program. that I really needed to uninstall Norton
Should have known better than to try anywhere but here : )
1) I noticed in your listing of services, you have "live update" from Symantec. I do not have that is that an old service that you still have showing or is it from NIS 2011? I still have NIS 2010 so could that be why I don't show that service?
2) as far as the items listed in services and the items listed as start up items, which load up first when you turn on the computer?
The live update service you saw in my list of services is actually there for Norton Ghost, not NIS.
Regarding question number 2, services will start up first. The startup list contains programs which need to run after Windows boots up but which do not need a formal service.
And yes, whoever it was from Microsoft Answers who told you that NIS should not show up under Services is wrong. Please do not uninstall NIS.
Oh no, I have no intentions of uninstalling NIS. The suggestor seemed to be one of those ticked off by the fact that Norton is a paid for service and seemed to be an anti-norton guy.
Thanks again for your help as well as all the others who helped me with this
Bombastus- I had to give the solution to Allen, as he provided me with the visual. Since I'm a simpleton, I need visuals
Allen- One last question. To see the list of services, one can access that like I did by selecting "Run" from start menu, then typing is MSCONFIG, then selecting services tab from the panel that displays, right?

Hi Calls,
It is always your call on which post to mark as the solution. Of course Bombastus did provide the correct answer first.
Yes, "msconfig" is the command from the "run" box to see the list of services which are configured to run at startup.
You can also type "services.msc" from the run box to see a list of all services which are installed in the system but that is less relevant because many of them are not configured to run at startup, but it is a more complete list of everything.
