Signing up to user community

It would be nice to have a solution for the quirk(s) I encountered today.

I provided my E-mail address while signing up for community participation.  It was not clear what the next steps were supposed to be.  After clicking on a hyperlink to re- send the confirmation, I finally figured out that the ISP had spammed the E-mail from Norton to me.

The act of opening the E-mail transmitted the confirmation to Norton.

I was asked to supply a user name.  My name was displayed in a data box.  There was a note telling me that Norton had provided the suggested user name.  My name was spelled correctly and I didn't want to have one more alias to memorize. So I tried to accept having my own name as a user name.  It errored out telling me that name was already in use.  If my name is already in use by someone else as their user name, why did the Norton system recommend using my name?  Shouldn't it have rejected its own recommendation?

What is my user name?

Is another person using that user name in the Norton Community?

Do all people signing up get treated this way?

Hi, Jonathon. Also in addition to what floplot has said, once you have an account, you can call it up { top right of any forum page under Account ! }, click on Edit and change your user name if you want a different one.

You can also fill in other fields such as Preferences, etc.

@Jonathan Banta:

Norton Community does not enforce the "real name policy" at the time of commenting.  You may change the Username setting@ https://community.norton.com/en/user  anytime (correct Norton log-in info will be required.). Somehow, you're not alone, as some other Norton user is using the same name like yours.

Usename is also called login name, logon name, sign-in name, sign-on name. a unique sequence of characters used to identify a user and allow access to a computer system, computer network, or online account. -- dictionary.com

And, you may use a fake name by accessing fakenamegenerator.com.

For more info, you may Chat with Norton Support. Thx

Hello Jonathan Banta

Other users may respond to your post, but it can take some time before someone does respond. There were only 3 minutes between your 2 posts.

Your username is Jonathan Banta. Let me see if I can find what I am looking for about signing up to the Community. Here is the link I was looking for. Please try reading this information and perhaps it will help you to understand the registration process better.

Thanks.

Am I supposed to add a reply to my own notification of a problem?
