Silent Mode

I find the number of pop-ups Norton generates very irritating.  I therefore use Silent Mode to prevent them.  However, the choice of Silent Mode duration periods are very limited and restricted to a maximum of 1-day.  Even when Silent Mode is activated, some pop-ups still appear.  Also, when 1-day is selected as the duration, it often only lasts just a few hours.  Is there anyway to fully activate Silent Mode for a period of my choosing, i.e. until I chose to reactivate?

Hi Guys,

Had school holidays the past week, and I watched a couple of DVD's during that time. Found a problem with silent mode - notifications still popped up while I was watching in full screen mode. I watched about 4 DVD's, it did this with 2 of them (I guess this just had to do with the day and time they were watched on and at). It was a notification to tell me that it was running background tasks - I believe one of them an idle rime scan. surely it shouldn't have done this?

Thanks.

Silent mode etc. on default settings

Hi matt :

I think (as same thing happened with me also) the idle time FSS has a higher security priority...like say,

If FSS comes up with threats in system restore area which requires user attention for removal , then this should be notified to the user.

I think that's the main reason behind this.

In addition , if you still want NIS to remain quiet ,you can add the application on which you were playing the DVD to NIS's silent mode settings.

Go to Settings==>Miscellaneous Settings==>Under Silent Mode Settings ==>User Specified Programs......configure.

ok, I understand. But I would still like a Symantec employee to confirm this, as it really doesn’t make sense to me to notify a user of a general background activity that does not require any sort of user intervention or knowledge. Hmmm

Hi mattsegers,

Could you please let me know which application did you use to watch your DVDs?

Thanks,

-Lynn

LynnH,

Thanks for the response.

I was using Windows' Media Player 11. I may have used VLC as well, but it would have been one of the two, and I defintitely did use WMP for at least one. Regardless, judging by NIS' logs at the time, it was in Silent Mode.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for the information. We will try to replicate the issue in house and will keep you posted on progress.

There is currently no way to extend the time limit for Silent Mode beyond 1 day.
