Hello, I decided to stream a video from Amazon for the first time and I received a prompt which gave me a choice to enable or "don't enable" Microsoft silverlight. I assumed that since I had it installed on my computer, it would automatically do what it needed to do to run the video but it's never that simple for me. I guess what I'm trying to ask is it safe to click "enable" and allow it to run automatically every time I watch a video. I think my Silverlight version is 5.1. Thanks
Hello poppy052,
Although it looks as though implementing Silverlight in the context of Amazon Video is legit, it may be undesirable. Many are complaining non-stop, and what I could extrapolate was it is more advantageous to run Flash.

I have Silverlight version 5.1.20513.0 which was installed on 7/11/2013 on a Win 7 machine.
Silverlight, I have to laugh. Yeah, it’s a light that when you turn it on, you find silver! (LoL) I remember a time when Microsoft Update didn’t use Silverlight. Then, one day I go to the site and its like, “You need Silverlight in order for this Website to function properly….” What a load of garbage. Simplicity. That’s what these people have to get through their heads. Fine, I’ll get your “updates”, but don’t bother me with extra components. Extraneous things such as yet not limited to: QuickTime, RealPlayer, at the end of the proverbial day, it’s all over-glorified garbage.
Funny, I never utilised Amazon in the context of their videos - - I’m lucky if the free preview functionality for their books work! In scope of the former, my initial reaction was to “not allow”, however, it looks as though Amazon can use (if not always seamlessly) Silverlight, so, most likely, why you are being prompted and most likely it is not of concern/malicious in this regard at least. I would say that if you were being prompted about Silverlight and no one was aware of Amazon utilising Silverlight, then, that might be a flag. As to the fact that Silverlight is on your system already so why does it not function without prompting…. I mean, is this a Microsoft security message explaining something to the effect of, “Amazon is trying to access Silverlight would you like to allow this?” For example, I am constantly getting Windows 7 security messages pertaining to allowing/disallowing MSN to perform various actions after I close out of my MSN e-mail. Yes, MSN components are already on the system so you would think it would just do what it needs to do under the radar, however, because I have “User Account Control Settings” pretty high, I receive notification. Because MSN is a legit actor, I can allow it, but don’t because MSN is annoying. Bottom line, things that you would think would stay in the background, do not, necessarily. Maybe it is not a Microsoft security message as outlined prior, rather, directly from the Silverlight application to configure your preferences moving forward since it has detected that Amazon has accessed it? It would really help if you captured a screenshot of the message so it can be determined with more certainty what is going on. Again, just my two cents, but because it is known that Amazon is connected with Silverlight and both are legitimate actors, at least in this technological sense, I would be less inclined to worry about this.
Good luck, and hopefully something of what I presented was able to clarify.
Sincerely,
H.B.
P.S.- Personally, these days, after “catching wind” (so to speak) of unfair pricing tactics, I try to avoid Amazon.
Thank you Hammer Bro for taking the time to explain. After rechecking, it was indeed Amazon detecting Silverlight. I read the posts from the Amazon members that you provided and I have decided to pass on the video streaming for the time being. You have given me a starting point to do a little more research concerning Flash and Silverlight. Being as computer challenged as I am, I didn't know what the difference was between the two. I was 50 years old before I was convinced by my children to buy a computer so it has been quite a challenge for me, but thanks to people like you on this forum it has made it a lot easier.
Thanks again
Hello again poppy052,
I just want to apologise for the long-winded nature of my answer. To be honest, as I reviewed my initial write-up, I was not satisfied, and re-crafted it to make sure I was addressing all facets of your question, but, alas, that is where it went a little longer. I also want to apologise for taking so long to respond back. Truth be told, I am not only managing health issues, but find myself in the middle of a pretty aggressive job search amidst a very turbulent economy. Ideally, I would like to be on this forum much more, however, I also acknowledge the reality that that will not always be possible. You can also find me on safeweb.norton.com: http://safeweb.norton.com/profile/Hammer%20Bro as I compose reviews of Websites for them.

You explain,

Age is no barrier! I attended an R.S.V.P. meeting wherein it was discussed that age discrimination (with respect to Seniors) is completely unacceptable and should never be tolerated. The citizenry must be ever-mindful that just because someone reaches a certain age does not mean that they become recluse. I am tremendously proud that you are forging ahead!
I would like to take some time and thank you for seeking community.norton.com for all your information needs.
