Skype & NIS10?

My wife has been using MSN for IM and video calls.

One of her friends is encouraging her to use Skype.  However, I am hesitant to run Skype as I see that it is not one of the IM clients which is secured by NIS.

Would anyone know the answers to the following questions?

(1)  What exactly does NIS' IM security actually protect from?  Is it only attachments and chat URLs or does it protect the IM protocol/client from malicious inbound hacking attempts?

(2)  What is the risk of running Skype which is not supported by NIS?

(3)  I see Trillian is supported.  Would installing Trillian and using it mitigate any risk due to the lack of Skype support by NIS?  It looks to me like this would not eliminate any risk as the Skype client still needs to be installed and running for Trillian to work.

Thanks.
