Slow PC - CPU Usage History

When I start up my PC, after a few minutes my software slows down (and often freezes for about 30 seconds). When I look in Windows Task Manager, my CPU Usage shows 100% for a considerable period of time.

The fan on my PC whirs as if the processor is working way too hard.

Everything points to Norton Antivirus software being the offensive item. The ccSvchst.exe files look like they're using a lot of memory.

What should I do. Remove Norton and custom install again ?

Guy

Hi,

I think I'm repeating myself here, but when I look on the Processes tab, there is one programme that stands out, the details of which are:

Image Name             User Name        CPU        Mem Usage

ccSvcHst.exe            System                98           19,488k

Please be advised, I'm not an experienced technician.

Guy

In Norton's settings please check that Under Computer Scans Early load is turned on. It its not, please turn it on, reboot, and let us know the results.

It is turned on.

And do you see this slow down only after starting up your PC, and only for this little time? Or do you see it after start up any times as well?

Plus can you please give us some info about your PC:

- what processor you have

- how much memory

- which Windows OS (and Service Pack) is installed?

The PC slows down at start up, can be for up to 5 minutes. It also slows down other times as well, also for 5 or more minutes.

The info you requested:

Intel Centrino processor: x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 6 GeniuneIntel ~1588 Mhz

Total Physical Memory: 512.00 mb

Available Physical Memory: 206.27 mb

Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 gb

Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 gb

OS Name: Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600

Cheers

What other products and processes are running with Norton together?

Hello Guy,

Looks like you're seeing the same problem as me.

I see that you've quoted your CPU as an Intel Centrino but that term was used by Intel to refer to a collection of components used on laptops geared towards WiFi, if I'm right. No doubt if I'm wrong, someone will correct me. From the other details you've provided about your CPU, I suspect that you may have a Pentium M 1600MHz and I presume you're using a laptop.

I am running a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM and the same OS as you. Please see:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/High-CPU-usage-when-PC-idle/td-p/266603

My guess is that your CPU and mine are of similar processing power. From the responses I received to the above thread, it has provided me with the final impetus to purchase a new PC. Of course, you may well want to pursue different avenues.

Best wishes,

JPC

Hi Guru,

Here's a screenshot of the Wndows Task Manager when the PC slows down. You'll see CPU Usage at the bottom is 100% with a file called ccSvchst.exe using 98% of CPU !

Hi there JPC,

Thanx for your advice, it may well be the final solution !!!

Cheers

Guy

Hello Guy,

thanks for the picture.

Can you please check my previous request, what other products and processes are running with Norton together?

I'm asking it, because as JPC wrote, it is highly possible, that it is an issue caused by your PC as it has not so much memory. And if we can find some products, or services that are unnecessary to start, it can save you some time, and the processor would have less to do.

ps: I myself have a older PC with a 2.4GHz Celeron processor + 1GB RAM, and I see it myself too that Norton (or any security product) can slow the PC down.

PapauZ,

I think the weak link here is primarily the CPU and not so much a memory (RAM) problem. It is my view that disabling other processes at start-up, for example, will have minimal impact (if any) on Guy's PC slowing down. Applications from a range of software developers seem to place progressively higher demands on the hardware - particularly the CPU. In a way, it is to be expected and fair enough.

JPC

Hi there.

Okay, you want me to check what other products and processes are running with Norton together.

Can you advise how I might determine this ? I'll take a screenshot when I can, but I have no idea how or where to find this info.

I once did something with Start > Run > Open and then typed something into the box, but I really don't remember what it was. It gave me a list of processes at startup. Is this what you're looking for ?

Cheers

Guy

Here are the startup processes:

7610i8489B669B22B7302

You can disable these:

Reader_sl

QTTask

jusched

And try these as well:

ICO

AdobeARM

iTinesHelper

AppleSyncNotifier

Adobe Gamma Loader

NkbMonitor

Let us know the results.

No improvement whatsoever.

The offending items seem to be

svchost.exe

ccSvcHst.exe

Can you at least tell me whether these are Norton programmes ? If so, what are they, and what are they doing ?

Guy

Hi guysp,

In Norton Miscellaneous Settings, what do you have the Idle TIme Out set to?

Hello Guy,

With reference to the two processes you have identified above, please search for processlibrary in Google or Norton Safe Search. Then, search within the processlibrary for these processes. You'll get the information you need. Originally, I provided direct links but Symantec, quite rightly, are none-too-happy about doing this. That's why I edited this post.

All the best.

Guysp

You could try this -

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Possible-Solution-CCSVCHST-EXE-Proble...

it worked for me !

I can assure you I was having exactly the same problem as you with the same

level of frustration over the process ccsvchst.exe running the CPU at 100%.

It takes only a few minutes and if it doesn't work you haven't lost much time.

Good luck
