Slow start up from Norton 2013

So now after a couple of days, when starting up Windows, I always go to Norton and update it manually.

But now out of sudden, there is a huge delay, when Norton is finally is started up. In the beginning I didn't face with these problems neither with Norton 2012. So I unistalled it manually and with the Removal Tool couple of times now, but at each restart or cold boot, I still face these problems, and it's becoming quite annoying.

I'm using a SSD OCZ Vertex 4 so that is not the problem. All other problems run fine, except on Norton 2013.

Any more with these experiences? I am sure I can't be the only one...

Hi Cell,

You're not alone on this. Personally, I'm waiting awhile before going to the 2013 model. My NIS 2012 works quite well without all the problems users are facing now. Here are some threads where people have been posting their various issues with NIS 2013.

I have the same issue after updating to NIS 2013. Window firewall prompts me for permissions for some apps before finally NIS takes over.

If this doesent get fixed soon, I will have to start looking at alternatives.

Yeah, this is annoying.  Particularly when trying to tweak an overclock.  I used to get a flash of the welcome screen the very second the boot logo finished loading.  Now I gotta sit and wait on both screens, then I have to wait until NIS gets it's **bleep** together before I can even open firefox.

I also am having the same problem. I have a machine that booted up in 20 secons with NIS 2012. With NIS 2013, it is coffee break time. Any suggestions from anyone?

Check under Settings - Computer - Real Time Protection. Check the setting for Enable Boot Time Protection. If it is set to aggressive, it will cause the slowest boot up as it loads and checks more items before finishing the boot process. Normal gives a faster boot up while still giving protection. Off does not protect during the bootup process, but allows the fastest access to the computer.

Hello everyone from Japan! I too have been tearing my hair out (what little is left) over the ponderously slow boot time with NIS 2013...I did stumble on one thing that seems to have fixed it for me...your mileage may vary...like everyone I was checking registry, boot items, etc and regularly deleting any file that I thought was causing the slow-down when I noticed, when using Ccleaner, that is was deleting the Norton Installer Logs.  I "unticked" the box to delete these files and that seemed to do the trick...at least for me (Windows 64 Ultimate, 4 gb mem) . Now NIS 2013 boots nearly, but not quite as fast as NIS 2012 with no issues...apparently, NIS 2103 looks for these files on boot and if they are deleted, it must re-create them each time, hence the mind numbing boot time...if they are left alone, not deleted, it seems to be a happy camper and boots right up with no delays and I get to the desktop and internet fairly quickly...mind you, still not quite as fast as NIS 2102, but still better than before where you could time the boot up time with a calendar! Now I have no idea if there is a fix / patch in the works (one would surely hope so after all the complaints)...but for me anyway, so far...it seems to be working...I suspect that over time the Norton Installer Logs will become really bloated and something else will need to be done...but for now...a workaround??

Add me as another who updated and went back to Internet Security 2012 because of the slow start.

If you have not found a solution, try going into "services" and look for "Windows Font Cache Service" and double click it.  Change the "Startup type" from "Automatic (Delayed Start)" to "Automatic".  This did the trick for me.

Knocked nearly a minute off the time to the display of the Norton icon in the system tray on my system.

Hello everyone...well,  I've run out of patience with NIS 2013...I've tried every recommended advice here, tried tweaking myself and nothing works on a permanent basis...just for a few re-boots, then back to very very very long boot times...over 10 minutes in some cases...and Symantec is completely quiet on the issue...they won't even acknowledge there is a problem...a case of " took the money and ran" maybe...so, all that said...does anyone know how revert back to NIS 2012? Or recommend another product?? I'll revist NIS 2013 later on this year if I haven't already found an alternative product or keep using NIS 2012 as long as my subscription is valid...too bad Symantec...you really disappointed...not so much with issues, rather your lack of addressing them or even admitting there is a problem...as for those paid for reviews in PC Magazine...well, I guess that says it all..."paid for reviews"...certainly not the case in my world or the real world of many consumers...it seems that most of the ideas are coming from the end users, the customers...and not from Symantec...doesn't that seem a litle odd?? The tail wagging the dog so to speak???

Actually,  Symantec have acknowledged this problem and they are working on it.

If you would like to return to NIS12 you need to uninstall NIS2013 from Windows Control Panel and install a fresh copy of NIS12 from http://www.norton.com/nis12.  Alternatively uninstall as above,  download and run the Norton Removal Tool,  reboot,  then download a fresh copy from the link above.

Cheers,

Dave

This worked for me also. I have a brand new machine, ivy bridge 3770K, (4400 Mhz),  16 gb 1600 ram, Sandisk Extreme SATA 3 HD, W7 64 bit, Asus Z77 Sabertooth MB, AMD Radeon  HD 7870 VC, the whole nine yards, and to have to sit and wait for 90 seconds for a operable system was huge disappointment when I switched to NIS 2013. The change got me back to where I feel I should be when I boot up.

Thank you for the tip.

AyBarrap is absolutely on point in his recommendation in reconfiguring with Windows Font Cache.  You find the Services section by right clicking on My Computer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services.  Go into the right panel, find Windows Font Cache and follow his easy instructions.

I seriously doubt that changing font cache management from MSFT's default position affects any function significantly, and there is no question that it solves the problem of the slow startup.  I proved this to myself by toggling the cache management between the two settings and restarting my computer each time, and the IS 2013 loading paralleled the two settings exactly and repeatedly.

Also, be sure that you do NOT set your Norton Realtime boot protection to OFF to try to speed up booting(it doesn't work anyway to speed things up, and you lose potentially important protection.  Additionally, if it is set to OFF, and you have corrected the setting in the Windows Font Cache Manager, you will see the Norton icon in the Sys tray promptly, but you will note that it is deactivated, non functioning, and doesn't start up until you click either on it, or a desktop icon for Norton, which therefore entails a separate, unnecessary step which could be problematic if you forget to to it.  You can have the setting on Normal or Aggressive.  Normal is the default setting, and that would seem fine, and the program loads right away on booting.

THANK YOU, AyBarrap, very much for your very helpful posting. I had reverted to 2012 because of this bug, and with your workaround, I'm back to the latest engine which I think is a little nicer in design and quicker than its predecessor.

BTW, your screen name is newbie, and I would not in any way thought that making this association would have been intuitively obvious, so, if you care to comment, I'd be interested to know where you found this information, if you didn't figure it out from scratch. Perhaps Norton will figure out the bug in the interface of its latest iteration with the Default setting in Win 7 so that it will function normally as 2012 did, without having to go into Services  to make the adjustment. They could probably include the update as a patch in one of their Live Updates, or as a periodic update in the software engine itself which the user can download as long as the subscription is active.

Just having joined the community, I now understand why "Ay" is classified as Newbie, since I received a welcoming email having been given the same title, which obviously refers to status as a newcomer.  I figured that you, "Ay" were likely to be a fairly sophisticated Windows user to have come up with such an improbable solution which should benefit many people!!!

Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes we all start as Newbies. If you hang around a while and participate in the discussions, you too will get newer designations.

The forum is a community of users, great and small, that have something to contribute about the Norton Products according to their experience with them.

Feel free to comment if you see a problem you have run into that you found a solution for. Or if you have any other questions.
