Slow start-up since Snow Leopard - symdaemon taking 90% CPU

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard my startup is very slow - I am unable to connect to Wi-Fi and applications don't load for 30 secs - 1min while the beachball is spinning when I move the mouse over the right of the top-of-screen status bar.

When I look at iStat I see symdaemon is running, taking 90-100% CPU.  When symdaemon clears from the list of processes, the hang-up releases.

Is this a coincidence ?
