I just switched the security software for my small business workgroup to Norton Security Suite. Two notebooks, one with XPsp3 and one with Windows 7Ultimate 64bit SP1, had Norton Internet Security 2011 and have experienced no problems. One desktop with Windows 7Ultimate 64bit SP1 had McAfee Internet Security which was removed during the installation of NSS.
The desktop can now see the other computers' workgroup shares and can even open Remote Desktop on those machines but its own shares cannot be seen by eithe of them. When I ping its IP address from those machines I get no response. If I turn off Smart Firewall, the problems goe away. I can reach the desktop and of coursem I can successfully ping it.
I compared the settings, including the Traffic Rules, between the desktop and the Win7 notebook and they appear identical. As far as other software these two machines are configured nearly identical.
The help file mentions the access behavior of other computers when Automatic File/Printer Sharing is turned on and it may well be that those computers, being notebooks, were asleep at the time NSS was installed but I can't even see the desktop's name in the network list nor can it be pinged without disabling Smart Firewall so the individual shares don't appear to be the root of the matter.
I could switchback to McAfee for this machine but I've had good experience with Norton and NSS was part of my new business internet service package.
Can anyone offer a advice on how to resolve this issue?
Thanks,
Grif
