Hello Internet Peoples,
Every now and then when Firefox or Chrome automatically updates, Norton Internet Security 2014's "Smart" Firewall blocks the affected browser. It doesn't give me an option/warning, it just prevents the browser from connecting to the internet - - I know this to be the case, because when I turn off the firewall, *presto* the browser can connect.
So I try to go into the firewall's Program Rules - as I heard that, even though the firewall lists the affected browser as 'allowed', after successive browser update versions, NIS no longer recognizes it as the same browser that I told it to allow in the past - but as soon as I click on "Configure [+]", all of NIS becomes unresponsive (ie, the windows become faded and the Windows Task Manager declares Norton Internet Security (32 bit) "Not Responding".
No matter what I try, I CANNOT GET INTO THE PROGRAM RULES. I've tried running Live Update, I've tried running NIS' self-diagnostic (it found no problems with the installation), and I've tried updating the browsers (with the firewall disabled of course). I've also tried repeated restarts of the computer (and even disabling Windows 8's fast startup feature). I believe this is a years-old issue but after extensive searching on the forum, I get the impression that there is no solution yet (though I did see a thread where someone suggested that Symantec "eventually" releases an update that changes the program rule setting for me without actually fixing the issue of me being unable to access the settings).
I'm hoping that I just failed to find the right thread and, in that case, beg your pardon for yet another post on the topic.
Many thanks,
-mrfigment
