I am not really sure to be honest. What I do know is that the word "smur" was something I have never seen on my security log for my belkin wireless router. The other thing was that this was also showing under my router firewall log. Ever since then my whole wireless network at home has just been slow to unresponsive at times. Thanks for your response btw.
I've also done some research online and from what I was able to find was that the "smurf" virus basically increases traffic to my wifi router which slows it down and who knows what else down the road.
Hi MOTIV8ER,
That IP address range is automatically assigned by Windows when it cannot obtain an address through DHCP. My guess (and I am not knowledgeable enough about this particular issue to offer more than a guess) is that some WIndows machine is unable to get an address from your router and is attempting to connect out using the 169.254.x.x address that Windows has picked. It would not normally get a response using an address in that IP range, and the router may be misinterpreting that as a Smurf denial of service attack. If it were actually such an attack, you would probably have no internet access at all. Check your network settings in your PCs to make sure that they can get a DHCP address automatically, and check the IP address assigned to each machine to make sure that is in the range of private IP addresses normally assigned by home routers (usually 192.168.x.x) rather than a 169.254.x.x address.
I will look into that as an option. Thanks again for your response.
