Solved: Ghost 14.0 not seeing current drives, unable to back anything up

I'm posting this in hopes that it might be of help to others.  I saw numerous postings here and elsewhere from over the years discussing problems very similar to the one I'm describing below.  But no obvious solutions were ever posted.  So I'm posting what I found, in hopes that anyone else in this position might find it useful.

I recently bought Norton Ghost 14.0 for my Samsung NC10 netbook.  Ghost 14.0 installed fine, but it was unable to back anything up because it could not find any hard drives on the system.  The system shipped with a 160 GB hard drive split into three partitions: two approx. 75 GB C: and D: partitions and one recovery partition.  Errors like the following littered the system's event log:

Error EC8F1780: Cannot successfully reconcile changes since last session. Error EC8F1771: Cannot enumerate the current drives on this system. Error EBAB0013: A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly. CHECK failed, WindowsComputer::AddPageFileInfo: .\WindowsComputer.cpp(1680): false.
Details: 0xEBAB0013
Source: Norton Ghost

I tried reinstalling Ghost, rebooting, and searching all over the place for information that might help.  The best I could find were suggestions to repartition the disk, reinstall NET 2.0, and other nightmarish Windows tricks.  Nothing promising.

This morning, though, I looked more closely at the error, saw the "AddPageFileInfo" method call, and thought that perhaps destroying and recreating the paging file on the system might help.  Sure enough, that did the trick.  As soon as the paging file on C: was destroyed, Ghost started working and suddenly saw all drives as it should.  I recreated the paging file, and I was able to completely back everything up with no trouble.  I also can chkdsk on both partitions, but nothing egregious was found.

Hope that's helpful to someone...
