As a part of weekly maintenance I run the Win. Defragmentation Programme and each month save the Report to file (I know it's sad!) From Jan 1012 to Sept 2013 the report always showed "Files that cannot be defragmented - None" However since Oct the report has shown aprox two pages detailing files that have not defragmented. All of the files relate to Norton data. The details of the report show that changes also occurred to both the "File & MFT fragmentation" figures. Because of the suddenness of thechange I am hoping to find an explanation for it and whether it has any worrying significance. My system is Win XP SP3, MS Office 2003, NIS 2014 and N. Utilities v14. and the hard disc has 75% free space. Would be very grateful for any information. Regards Marnhullman
P.S. I have the weekly details tabulated on a spread sheet if this would be helpfull.
Re. Katie’s message about moving my post to a more appropriate forum, not sure if that means entering the detail again, so here goes. As a part of weekly maintenance I run the Windows Defragmentation programme and once each month save a copy of the Defrag. Report to file.(I know-its sad!!) From Jan 2012 up to Sept.2013 the report always showed “Files that cannot be defragmented - None” However since Oct.the report has shown aprox two pages detailing files not defragmented. All of these files are related to Norton data. In addition the body of the report shows big changes have occurred to both the “File and MFT fragmentation figures” Because of the suddeness of the change I am trying to find an explanation and whether or not it is indicative of a problem affecting my computer. At present all seems well. My system is Win XP SP3, MS Office 2003, NIS 2014. Norton Utilities and the 140GB hard disc has 75% free space. The filed details are tabulated on a spread sheet if needed. Do hope that someone has some experienced this phenomena. Regards Marnhullman.
I only have Norton Internet Security on my PC, and an XP defrag won't move the Norton files anymore. Seems to have started recently, or when NIS 2012 or NIS 2013 installed.
This seems to be a Norton Internet Security problem. I don't think this thread should have been moved from NIS queue.
Most people probably have the problem, but don't know it, also.
Thanks for your comments, it is comforting to know that someone else is experierencing the same phenomenon. Perhaps one of the Norton team might care to comment. I'm not particularly concerned by the change if there is a rational explination and it is not indicative of a harmfull condition.
Many of t he Norton Internet Security 2012 (and 2013, now) files are reported by XP defrag, as not able to be defraged. This did not happen in 2011 release. Help!

Hi,
I'm not positive but I think that the security for the Norton files has been tightened to prevent corruption. The Auto-Protect feature does it's very best to be sure that nothing makes changes to the Norton core files - but Norton. The amount of fragmentation that might be present should not be a problem.
If your system becomes so slow that you feel that something must be done then use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool to place a clean copy of the program on your system. After rebooting, be sure to run live update until the program tells you that all updates have been downloaded and installed.
It could be an added security aspect through an updates from Norton as the defragmentation process rewrites the data to a different location on the hard drive this could allow the possibility of code being written into the norton product as the defragmentation process rewrites the data so Norton has locked the software out of the defragmentation process which if this is the case it sounds like a benefit rather than a problem.
Thanks for your replies and suggested answers which seem to fit with the timetable for my change to a later Norton version. With XP set to end next April I have just renewed my machine for one with Windows 7 installed and am now grappling with a whole lot of new problems. Haven't yet looked at details for Defrag but am comforted by your comments.
