Sonar: is there a way to configure it or turn it off?

The reason I abandoned Norton Internet Security is the inability to control how Sonar works. Has this changed at all in later releases of NIS? Can we now configure it? Can we now turn it off, if need be?

Is there a way to configure Sonar to not flag particular apps as malicious? That is, can I place apps on a white list so that Sonar will avoid flagging them?

In Norton 2011, there is the "Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect and SONAR Detection"

Where you can add Files and Folder to a list for SONAR to ignore.

ADDED: If I remember rightly previous Norton years (2009, 2010) when you excluded files in the Auto-Protect list SONAR would or could still detect the files that were in the list as SONAR was not included and so would ignore the list(s). Which people complained about.

Ah. This is the answer I wanted to hear. Thanks.

Actually, I remember one other thing that troubled me about Sonar. It removed things without my intervention. Will the 2011 beta allow me to configure it to ASK before removing?

Hi ralvy,

With NIS 2011, Sonar will only ask you what to do if it considers the threat Low Risk. This is configured in Computer Settings > Sonar Advanced Mode, set to Automatic. This options is also available in NIS 2010.

Computer Settings > Remove Risks if I am away. Only applies to LOW risk detections. Set to OFF if you do not want Sonar to automatically remove low risk detections if you are away and cannot respond to the NIS prompt. Also available in NIS 2010 but called Remove Advanced Detections if I am away.

The main difference with Sonar in the 2011 versions is that you can configure exclusions without NIS first having to detect and quarantine it. E.g., you can preemptively configure this the same as with regular scan exclusions. This was a highly requested feature and Symantec has listened and added this.

One thing I wanted to clarify. When you turn Sonar OFF, this ONLY applies to Low Risk detections. High risk detections cannot be turned off.

Last thing I wanted to mention is that it is not recommended to install BETA software such as NIS 2011 on a production computer. I would recommend to hold off until 2011 is officially released.

Hope this helps.
